SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,013, dated September 24, 1991.

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that we, THOMAS ALLDER, the

. younger, builder and decorator, residing at 7 J erdan Place, Fulham, and THOMAS HEWER STREATER, window-cleaning contractor, residing at 90 Hazlebury road, Fulham, Lon- 'don, in the county of London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Seat or Stage for Window-Cleaners or the Like; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of the present invention is to provide a light and portable seat or stage for window cleaners and the like adapted to be detachably secured to a window-sill and to accommodate the user in either a sitting or a standing position, he being in either case inclosed on three sides and so protected against all risk of accident. Adjustments are provided for adapting the device for attachment to window-sills of varying dimensions, and when not required for use the apparatus may be folded together and compactly stowed away.

Our invention will be better understood on referring to the annexed drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof, and Figs. 3 and 4 are details.

A A are a pair of brackets or cantalivers, whereof the vertical sides a are furnished with studs or pins 1), Fig. 3, which enter cor responding holes 0, formed in a fillet d, Fig. at, which is preferably of wood and secured to the front of the wood sill or sash frame 6 by nails or screws. This fillet is so fixed that when the studs 1) are in place the lower surfaces of the brackets 01' cantalivers or feet f, provided or formed thereon, will bear on the stone sill :g inside the line of the supportingbrickwork. The said feet should not bear on the overhang of the sill, as the same might possibly give way. Each cantaliver or bracket A has an extension or arm A", which projects through the Window into the room and carries a slide h, adjustable longitudinally thereof and fixed by a thumb-screw-h. The said rod between its bearings traversing a claw or clamp Z, which passes through a-vertical slot in the bracket-piece aforesaid, and is thereby prevented from rotating with the screwthreaded rod 2' when the latter is revolved by the regulating-note" to effect the vertical ad j ustment of the said claw, which engages with the under side of the nosing an inside 'the window-frame or with a projection there provided. The brackets A having been fixed in position by slipping their studs b into the fillet-holes c and then adjusting the claws Z to engage beneath the nosing m may be finally tightened as an additional security by screwing down the tightening-screws 'n, which pass through the arms A and bear upon the sash-frame.

B is the seat, which is supported upon the oantalivers A and has in the under side holes entered by the studs 0 on the brackets. Lifting of the front of the seat is prevented by slipping it under the hooks or clipsp on the brackets, and as an additional security stoppieces 19 may be also fixed to the brackets to engage the rear edge of the seat. Hinged to the latter is the back 0, which is divided horizontally and hinged along the line of division, so that the upper portion 0 may be folded back, as indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 1, when the device is to be used by a person in a sitting posture.

D D are uprights pivoted to the brackets A at q, and E E are arms pivoted to said uprights and formed with hooks at their other too of the uprights D lever against the brackets A behind the studs b. To prevent the said uprights from being inadvertently thrust forward against the window, a tie-bar F is provided on each side, pivoted to the bracketA at t and engaging with its hooked enda stud u on the upright D. The tumbler s is preferably fixed to the pivot of the arm E and the arm and pivot made to move together, so that in order to engage the hooked end of the tiebarF with its stud u the arm E is first raised,

-thereby moving the tumbler 8' out of the clean ers, but also for painters and the like.

What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-.

1. A device for the purpose set forth, comprising brackets adapted to be detachablysecured to a window-sill, a seat carried by the brackets, a back hinged thereto, uprights hinged or pivoted to the brackets, means for preventing the collapse of the uprights when extended and arms or side guards detachably connecting said uprights with the back so as to support the latter, substantially as described.

2. In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination of a pair of brackets or supports adapted to be detachably secured to a window-sill, a seat supported by said brackets, a back hinged to the seat and divided and hinged horizontally so that the upper portion may be folded down, uprights attached to the brackets, and arms or side guards detachably connecting said uprights with the upper and lower portions respectively of the back so as to support the same, substantially as described and illustrated.

3. In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination with brackets adapted to be detachably secured to a window-sill, of a seat supported on said brackets a back hinged thereto and divided and hinged horizontally, uprights hinged or pivoted to the brackets anddetachably connected by swing-arms or side guards with the two portions of the back, and tie-bars detachably connecting the uprights when extended with the brackets, substantially as described.
