OLIVERE. PONTIOUs, OF wAUsEON, OHIO.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 681,260, dated August 27, 1 901. Application filed April 22, 1901. Serial No. 56,904. (N 111001610 To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER E. PONTIO Us, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Wauseon, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in lWrenches, of which the following is aspecification This invention relates to wrenches; and the convenient form of quick-acting wrench by j desired distancealong the handle or stock of .l the implement, so as to bring said movable jaw into close relation to a nut, pipe, or other article to be grasped and held between the wrench;jaws, after which the movable jaw may be adjusted into actual contact with or close relation to such nut or article and its movement away from the same prevented during the Operation of turning a nut or other j articleV The specific object-of the invention is to L l I" provide, in connection with the movable jaw adjusting-screw and movable jaw and which also embracesthe handle of the wrench and Alies in position to be conveniently grasped and feed or adjusting screw, a forked thumbpiece which forms a connection between the and operated by the thumb and forenger of the operators hand.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel const-rucg E tion, combination, and arrangement of parts claimed. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is hereinafter fully described, illustrated, and
` a side elevation of a wrench constructed in j responding parts in all figures of the drawings. l
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the handle or stock of the wrench, which is shown as of rectangular shape in cross-section and provided at one end with a fixed or immovable jaw 2.
In carrying out the present invention a i `movable or adjustable jaw 3, which embraces by means of a pivot-pin 7.
the handle 1 and is slidingly mounted thereon for movement toward and away from the fixed jaw, has pivotally connected thereto a forked thumb-piece 4, which is provided with a lug or ear 5, which fits in a socket 6 in the movable jaw 3 and is held pivotally therein The thumb-piece isis provided with fork-arms 8, which extend transversely of the handle 1 and on opposite sides thereof, said fork-arms serving to guide the thumb-piece as it is vibrated toward or y away from the handle and also forming iinger-grips, so that the operator may grasp said fork-arms between his thumb and forefinger for the purpose of disengaging the feed or adjusting screw in order to slide the movable jaw quickly along the wrench-handle. The forked thumb-piece is further provided with a recess 9, in which is received one end of the adjusting or feed screw 10, the threads of which are adapted to engage teeth or threads 11 in the rear edge of the handle 1, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The screw 10 is rotatably mounted on a pin 11,
. Which is screwed into a threaded Opening in the forked thumb-piece 4 and held. The pin 11a may, however, be fastened to the forked thumb-piece in any preferred way. When the thumb-piece is rocked outward or away from the handle 1, the adjusting-screw 10, which is carried by the thumb-piece, is also rocked outward and moved out of engagement with the teeth or threads 11 on the handle. The screw 10 is normally held in engagement with the handle by means of a pressure-spring 12, one end of which is connected to the movable jaw 3 and the opposite or free end of which bears against the forked thumbpiece 4. v
It will be seen that the operator by graspv ing the forked thumb-piece l may rock the adjusting or feed screw 10 out of engagement with the handle 1 and then quickly slide the movable jaw toward or away from the fixed jaw, so as to bring both jaws into close relationship to the nut or other object to be clamped. The spring then restores the adjusting-screw to its normal position, after which the operator by turning said screw may eifect a nice adjustment of the parts prior to turning the nut on or off. Y
IOO
Having thnsvdescribed the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wrench comprising a, handle; a fixed jaw 5 thereon; a movable jaw slidingly mounted thereon; a spring-pressed thumb-piece pivotally connected to the sliding jaw and provided with fork-arms which embrace the wrench-handle; and an adjustngscrew car- Ared by the forked thumb-piece amd having 1o a'swivel engagement therewith and a threaded engagement with the handle ofthe Wrench. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presenee of two Witnesses.
