Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAWRENCE GLYNN, OF GAMBRIDGEPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
PIPE'AND NUT WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,041, dated February 22, 1881,
Application filed January 5, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE GLYNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garnbridgeport, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe and Nut Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe and nut wrenches, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section; and Fig. 3 represents a cross-section, as seen from below the line A B, shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawingsl I a is the stationary jaw with its downwardprojecting shank or handle a, as shown. To the shank a, just below the jaw a, is secured the clamp b by means of rivets b b,- or it may be forged or made in one piece with the shank a, if so desired. Through the rear projecting ends of the clamp bis inserted the rivet or fulcrum-pin 0 that passes through the slotted opening d in the shank d of the movable jaw d, as shown. The lower end of the shank d is screw-threaded, as shown, for the reception of 't-heregulating-screw e, by means of which the movable jaw (Z is adjusted to and from the stationary jaw a, for which purpose the upper end of said screw 6 is brought to bear against the under side of the stationary rivet or fulcrum-pin c, and the said screw 6 is manipu lated by turning the serrated thumb-piece c in its lower end, as shown. The under side of the thumb-piece e is made to reston a small 5 bracket or projectiomf, which is secured to or made in one piece with the stationary shank a. The bracket f is preferably provided in its outer end with a slotted perforation, f, (shown in Fig. 3,) that serves as a guide for the center-pin e on the thumb-piece e, as shown, when the movablejaw is swung on the fulcrum-pin c to grasp the pipe or nut between the jaws or to release it, as the case may be.
It is not absolutely necessary to have a slotted perforation,f, in the bracketf, nor a pin, 6, in the serrated thumb-piece e, assaid slot and pin may be dispensed with without detracting from the practical working of my improved wren ch.
g is a spring, interposed between the stationary shank a and movable shank d in the usual manner.
This improved wrench is particularly constructed with a view of making it wholly of forged metals, although it may be made of malleable or cast metal, if so desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- The herein-described pipe and nut wrench,
consisting of stationaryjaw a, its shank a,
and clamp 12, with fulcrum-pin c, of the movable jaw d, having elongated slotted opening (1 through its shank d, and provided with a screw-thread in its lower end for the reception of the adjusting-screw c, and of the adjustable screw 6, combined with the bracket or projectionfon the shank a, and the spring g, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LAWRENCE GLYNN.
Witnesses ALBAN ANDREN, HENRY UHADBOURN.
