Be it known that I, FRANK J. MERZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Match-Holder and Ash-Receiver; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a combined matchholder and ash-receiver; and the invention has for its primary object to provide a simple and neat device in which the ash-receiving portion of the device is separately connected with the match-holding part, so that the ash-receiving portion can be emptied and cleaned without the least possibility of displacing the matches from the holding or retaining portion of the device.

The invention therefore consists in the novel construction of combined match-holder and ash-receiver fully described in the following specification; and, furthermore, the invention consists in the several novel arrangements and combinations of the various parts of the device, all of which will be described more in detail hereinafter and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which form a part of this specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 an end View, of the combined match-holder and ash-receiver embodying the principles of my invention; and Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 4. is a longitudinal vertical section of the device, said section being taken on line 4 4 in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5 5 in the same view, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the device. Fig. 7 is a side View; Fig. 8, a top view; Fig. 9, a bottom View; and Fig. 10 is a longitudinal vertical section of a combined match-holder and ash-receiver of a modified form, said section being taken on line 10 10 in said Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is a vertical section of a match-holder and ash-receiver of still another modified form of construction, the separable parts be ing represented in their separated positions and the sectional representation of the said match-holder being taken on line 11 11 in Fig. 12 when looking in the direction of the arrow a; in said figure; and Fig. 11 is a plan or top View of the said match-holder.

Similar nu merals of reference are employed in all of the said above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

In the said drawings, 1 indicates a suitablyornamented base or stand, which is made of metal or any other material suitable for the purposes of my invention. This stand or base is provided at the top with an ornamental neck, as 2, and at the bottom may be surrounded by a flange 3, substantially as illustrated. As will be noticed more especially from Figs. 4 and 9 of the drawings, the said neck 2 of the base or stand 1 is provided in the top with an opening 4 of a peculiar shape, that in the present case being formed by the circular edge portion 5 and the straight edge 6. In the construction represented in Figs. 1 to 6,inclusive, the said base or stand 1 is provided at one side with a suitable receptacle or receiver formed bya downwardlyextending Wall, a connecting base-plate 8, and an upwardlyextending curved wall 9, terminating in the upper edge 10, in which may be placed matches, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of the said figures of the drawings. This receptacle or receiver forms an integral part of the said base or stand 1, as clearly illustrated. In place of this form of match receiver or holder 1 may form the base or stand 1 with the form of match holder or receiver 11 represented in Figs. 7 to 12, inclusive, the said match holder or receiver forming an integral part of the said base or stand 1, as shown. The ashreceiving portion is indicated by the reference-numeral 12 and is made dish or cup shaped, as clearly indicated in the several figures of the drawings.

In order that the ash-receiver 12 can be detachably connected with the base or stand 1, I have provided the said receiver on its under side with a stud or post 13, which corresponds in its cross-section to the outline of the hole or opening 4 in the neck 2 of the base or stand 1. By means of this projection or post 13 the said ash-receiver can be securely arranged in position upon the upper portion of the base or stand 1, the flat or straight edges of the hole or opening 4 and the projection or post 13 being in close contact to prevent any accidental displacement of the ash-receiver, but permitting of its removal from the said base or stand 1 when it is desired to empty the receiver 12 of its ashes. The said ash-receiver 12 may also be provided with an outwardly-extending arm or projection 14, which is provided with a concave surface, into which can be placed a lighted cigar, as will be clearly evident; but of course it will be understood that this arm 14 may be dispensed with, if desired. In Fig. 11 of the drawings it will be seen that the said ash-receiver 12 may be provided on its under side with a downwardly extending post 15, which is provided with a pair of oppositely-projecting lugs or teats 16. The base or stand 1 in this construction, as will be seen from an inspection of said Fig. 11 and from Fig. 12, is provided with a central opening 17 and a pair of oppositely placed slotted parts 18, through which the lugs or teats 16 on the post 15 can be passed, and by a slight turn of the ash-receiver 12 said lugs are made to ride upon inclined portions 19 on the under surface of the neck 2 of the base or stand 1, a stop 20 being provided, as shown, to limit the rotary motion of the ash-receiver. Thus it will be evident that the said ash-receiver can be quickly connected with the said base or stand of the match-holder and can be readily disconnected therefrom when it is intended to remove the ashes from the receiver 12.

From the above description of my invention it will be seen thatI have devised a useful device of a simple and cheap construction in which the ash-receiver can be readily emptied of its contents without the least danger of spilling the matches over the floor.

I am aware that some changes may be made in the details of the construction of the several parts without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The herein-described combined matchholder and ash-receiver, consisting, essentially, of a base or stand provided with a neck, a match-holder at one side of said base or stand, an ash-receiver adapted to be arranged on said base or stand, and means on the under side of said ash-receiverand in the neck of the said base or stand for separably connecting said ash-receiverand said base or stand, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The herein-described combined matchholder and ash-receiver, consisting, essentially, of a base or stand, having a neck provided with an opening 4 having a straight edge 6, a match-holder at one side ofsaid base or stand, and an ash-receiver on said base or stand, provided with a downwardlyextending projection having a flat side 13, adapted to be fitted in said opening 4 for separably connecting said ash-receiver and said base or stand, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. The herein-described combined matchholder and ash-receiver, consisting, essentially, of a stand, a downwardly-extending wall 7 within said stand, a connecting baseplate 8, and an upwardly-extending wall 9, all forming a part of said stand and producing a match-holder, and an ash-receiver on said stand, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. The herein-described combined matchholder and ash-receiver, consisting, essentially, of a stand, a downwardly-extending wall 7 within said stand, a connecting baseplate 8, and an upwardly-extending wall 9, all forming a part of said stand and producing a match-holder, aneck on said stand provided with an opening 4 having a straight edge 6, and an ash-receiver on said stand, provided with a downwardly-extending projection having a flat side 13, adapted to be fitted in said opening 4 for separably connecting said ash-receiver and said stand, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. The herein-described combined matchholder and ash-receiver, consisting, essentially, of a stand, a downwardly-extending wall 7 within said stand, a connecting baseplate 8, and an upwardly-extending wall 9, all forming a part of said stand and producing a match-holder, a neck on said stand provided with an opening 4 having a straight edge 6, and an ash-receiver on said stand, provided with a downwardly-extending projection having a flat side 13, adapted to be fitted in said opening 4 for separably connecting said ash-receiver and said stand, and an outwardly-extending arm 14 on said ashreceiver, having a concave surface, all arranged, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
