No. 637,7l4. Patented Nov. 2|, |399. A. P. s. DEEM & H. L. MINSKEB.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
(No Model.)
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADDISON P. S. DEEM AND HARRY L. MINSKER, OF CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,714, dated November 21, 1899.
Application filed June 8,1899. Serial No. 719,839. (No model.)
fo all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that we, ADDISON P. S. DEEM and HARRY L. MINSKER, of Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State `of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Display Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a device which will serve as a frame for advertisingv or pictorial matter and a receptacle for such articles as matches, cigars, cigarettes, and pipes, or soap and combs, or pens and ink.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the device that the display matter may be changedQand whereby also the device may be hung up or made to stand alone on a support, as may be deemed advisable.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthis specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. v1, drawn on a small scale. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4is a perspective view of the device, illustrating it asprovided with supports for penholders, combs, and the like.
The device is preferably made of sheet metal; but other material may be employed. The body A of the device is practically a frame, since a central opening 10 is provided, defined by a top member 11, having openings 12 therein, whereby the device may be hung up, side members 13, and a bottom member 14. The side members are double, but are in one piece. To that end a horizontal cut is made in the top member 11, at each end thereof, and the material thus released is carried rearward and parallel with the front of the frame, forming back side members 13a. (Shown in Fig. 2.) A channel 14a is formed between the front and back side members of the frame, and into these channels the edges of a board or card 15 are introduced. The card or board is placed in position to cover the opening 10 and be displayed at the front of the device. The bottom member 14 of the frame is cut vertically near each end on the same line as the inner edge of the side members 13, where the opening 10 is made, and
the material thus obtained is bent horizontally and then vertically upward, forming the bottom and front walls of receptacles or chambers 16 and 17, the back wall beingthe lower boundary member 14 of said opening. The receptacle or chamber 16 is preferably made fluidtight, and its formation is completed by the addition of an end plate 18, connecting the front and rear walls, and a partition 19 likewise connects the front and rear walls. The chamber or receptacle 17 is completed bythe addition of an end plate 20; but this end plate is preferably provided with a slot 21 in its upper edge. The receptacle or chamber 17 is likewise usually provided with a longitudinal slot 22 in its bottom.
Thelongitudinal connecting portions of the two side members of the frame are provided with avertical cut 23 at their lower ends, thus enabling the two members 13 and 13 to be bent in opposite directions to form legs 24, as shown in Fig. 4, adapted to support the device. Vhen the'device is to be hung up, the two side members 13 and 13a are placed in contact with each other the length of the cut 23. The two side members 13 and 13a are brought together in every event just below the receptacles, as shown in Fig. 3, forming bottoms for the channels 14a.
The arms 25 at the ends of the top member 11 of the frame, caused by the formation of the double side members 13 and 13a, may be in the same plane with said top member, as is also shown in Fig. 1; but preferably these arms 26 are carried forward at angles to the top member 1l of the frame and are provided with recesses 26 in their upper edges to receive a penholder, comb, or a like article.
The receptacle 16 may be used as a matchreceptacle, and the receptacle or chamber 17 'to hold a cigar, a cigarette, or a pipe, the mouth end of the cigarette or cigar being placed in the recess 21, and the stem of the pipe is also preferably made to extend out through said recess.
The two chambers or receptacles may be ,converted into one and, usedV for soap, vo1: the receptacle or chamber 16 may be used to hold ink, serving as an inkstanrd, if desired. The slot 22 in thel bottom of the receptacle 17 may be omitted; but the slot is preferably made in said bottom when the receptacle17 is to be used for cigars, pipes, and cigarettes, since the slot will then provide an exit for the ashes.
Having thus described ourinvention, we claim asnnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Adisplay device comprising a frame, the opening whereof is bounded by an upper single member, double side members having a channel between the front and rear portions thereof at the back of the frame, and a bottom member a portion' of which is carried horizontally and upward, forming front and rear Walls for receptacles, which receptacles are provided with end walls connecting the Y front and rear walls, the side members projecting, below the upturned portion which forms the receptacles, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A displayl'device, comprisingaframe, the opening whereof is bounded by an upper'single member, double side members having a channel between the front and rear portions thereof, and a'bottom member aportion of which is carried horizontally and upward, forming front and rearwalls for receptacles, which receptacles are provided with end walls connecting the front and rear walls, the end Wall of one receptacle having a recess produced in its upper edge and the double side membershavin g the lower portion of their con necting members longitudinally cut, whereby the said side members at their bottom portions may be bent in opposite directions, formingsupporting-legs for the device.
3. IA display device having a back formed with an opening, the material of the back be? ing bent on itself to form double side mem= bers, providing side channels for receiving a card, the device further having pliable arms at the sides at the top, the arms, having depressions in their upper edges.
