To all whom it 11mg concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. MAsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Varner, in the county of Ripley and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railway-Ties and Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to metallic railwaytiesand fasteners.
The object of the invention is to provide a tie of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production, and a fastener by means of which therails may be socurely locked to said tie without the em ploymeut of spikes or bolts.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved railwaytie. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same, showing the rail locked in place. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the baseplate of the tie and the top plate. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the rail-key. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the wedge-key, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the locking-key.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the base-plate of the tie, and 2 the top plate. The baseplate is provided with longitudinal spacedapart supports 3 and transverse spaced-apart supports 4, which may be cast or otherwise secured to the base-plate. These supports are provided with upwardly-extending pins 5, which register with and fit into sockets 6, formed in the under side of the top plate 2, whereby said top plate is attached to the bottom plate and is firmly supported by the sup ports 3 and 4 throughout its entire length.
7 denotes longitudinal apertures formed in the top plate, and 8 denotes lugs cast intogral with the top plate at the on ter ends of th slots.
9 denotes a rail, and 10 denotes a rail-key which is constructed at its upper end to engage the base of the rail and is provided with a T-head at its lower end. This key is inserted through the slot and given a quarter of a turn to make its head extend crosswise of the slot, in which position it will be impos sible to withdraw the key.
11 denotes a wedge-key, and 12 a lockingkey. After the rail-key has been placed in position the locking-key is inserted with its bent lower end under the T-head of the railkey and one member of its upper end bent over the upper end of the railkey, so as to hold said locking-key in position. The wedgekeyis nowdriven home and firmly binds the parts. The upper. end of the other member of the locking-key is now bent over the wedgekey, thus making it impossible for the keys to become separated and lost. To prevent the keys from tilting, the base-plate 1 of the tie may be provided with stop blocks or lugs 13.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of my improved tie will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation. It is of simple construction, may be produced at comparatively small cost, and is indestructible by fire or weather.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a tie havinglugs and longitudinal slots, of a rail-key having a T-head, a wedge-key, and an interposed locking-key, the lower end of which is bent over the T-head and the upper edge of which is bent over the wedge-key, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a tie having lugs and longitudinal slots, of a rail-key having a 69 key. The locking-key preferably consists of a strip of metal doubled upon itself and having at its lower end alaterally-projecting extension to fit under the T-head of the rail- T-head and the upper edge of which is bent nesses; over the wedge-key, and'a block carried by THOMAS F.
