SEECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,063, dated December '7, 19
Application filed April 11, 1901.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that LMARK ANTHONY BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Douglas, in the county of Coffee and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvementsin (Jar-Couplings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to cancouplings, and has for its object to provide a construction by means of which the coupling-pin is readily locked in its engagement with the coupling and readily detachable therefrom.
The invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure l is a perspective view showing one end of a car provided with myimproved coupling. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved locking-bearing.
Three bearings K K and K are alined with each other, as shown in Fig. 1. In these bearings a rocking shaft J is mounted so as to have a little longitudinal play. Firmly secured upon this shaft is an arm J, which is normally free to move radially as the shaft is rocked, which is done by means of the handles J Upon this radial arm .1 is a ring I for the purpose of raising the coupling-pin in the usual manner. The central bearing K is provided with two transverse slots K connected by a longitudinal passage K for the movement of the crank J The slots in the central bearing K together form a Z-shaped opening, thus forming oppositely-disposed lugs or shoulders K K lying in parallel planes at right angles to the general direction or axis of the rocking shaft. As the shaft is moved endwise to the right or left, the arm J may be made to engage either of said lugs or shoulders K K, and thereby locked against upward movement or against downward movement, as the case maybe. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A coupling device, com prisingabearing provided with a plurality of communicating slots, the walls of which form a pair of lugs located in a staggering relation, and a cylindrical shaft journaled in said bearing and free to slide lengthwise and also to rock, and provided with a radial arm extending through said slots and engaging said lugs and also provided with a handle for rocking said shaft and sliding the same lengthwise to engage the lugs.
2. A coupling device, comprising a rocking shaft mounted in a plurality of bearings and provided with a radially-disposed arm, one of said bearings being provided with two transverse slots located in different vertical planes and connected by a longitudinal passage, constituting a Z-shaped opening, through which the said radially-disposed arm extends.
3. A coupling device, comprising a bearing provided with a. cylindrical shaftseat and slotted so as to form a pair of twin lugs located in parallel planes, and having oppositely-disposed bearing-faces located in a staggering relation each to the other, a cylindrical shaft journaled in said shaft-seat and free to move lengthwise, a radial arm engaging said lugs, and means for securinga coupling-pin upon said radial arm.

A coupling device, comprising a rocking shaft provided with an arm free to move radially in different planes, a bearing for supporting said rocking shaft, said hearing being provided with staggeringlugs disposed in different planes at right angles to the length of said shaft for the purpose of limiting the the several different planes, and means for means for securing a coupling-pin upon said securing a coupling-pin upon said arm. arm
