Description

ELIJAH EATON, OF HARTFO RD, CONNECTICUT. VLetters Patent No. 68,858, dated September 17,1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN THREAD-POIN'IBRS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: j
Be it known that I, ELIJAH EATON, of the city oi' Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful article for the convenience of Threading Needles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a pair of small serrated and .corrugated jaws, actuated by a spring, to receive the end of the thread between them, to point it, previous to being passed through the eye of the needle.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same. The drawing-- Figure 1, is a side view of the pointer.
Figure 2, the face of the lower jaw.
Figure 3, the face of the upper jaw.
The lower metallic plate, iig. 2, A, I make of the required size, as shown ,in the drawing, with a small raised projection, B, the face of which is serra-ted transversely. At the back part., I attach permanent-ly the standard C. The upper plate D is oi' a similar form as the lower one A, and has a correspondingprojectiom, E, the fac-e `of which has sharp smallA eorrugations, in imitation of the teeth of a file, and at the backend is a flat projection, F, to form a hinge, by being inserted in the mortise between the two upright sides of the standards i.
C. A small pin passes through the same to make it a movable joint, On the face of both the upper and lower' `jaws is a small stud, G, to steady the spiral spring H, which encireles them. The spiral spring H, or its` equivalent, is placed on the studs G, and presss against the two plates A and D, tokeep them open and extended after being pressed together by the action of the thumb and finger when in operation. f
To use this article, the person takes hold of the thread near the end and passes the end between the two jaws, which are then compressed on to the same, and it is `then pulled out, which will form the necessary point for passing through the eye of the needle.
The object of' 'this invention is in its utility and use for all classes engaged in sewing, particularly for persons with imperfect or weak or injured front teeth. It will be convenient on the work-table, or can he attached to a sewing machine, or any other position. I do not confine myself to the position, shape, or size of the article, but to the arrangement as herein stated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A thread-pointer, consisting of the hinged plates A and D, the ends of\which are provided with projections B E, the faces of which are' corrugated, serrated, or provided with a file surface, substantially as and for thepur-4 pose specified.
