GABRIEL E. BILDERBAOK, OF OOLLIERS, WVEST VIRGINIA.
ENVELOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,582, dated December 10, 1901. Application filed August 22,1901. Serial No. 72,936. (No model.)
To all? whom it may concern:
Be it known that LGABRIEL E.BILDERBACK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Colliers, in the county of Brooke and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in envelope, and more particularly to that class that cannot be opened without detection.
The invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby the flaps of the envelop may be securely sealed together in a manner that-they cannot be steamed open; f urtherm0re,to construct the engaging tongue in such a manner that it cannot be detached without leaving marks of mutilation, whereby it may be easily detected that the envelop has been tampered with.
The invention further contemplates constructing an envelop of the above-described class that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the inventionconsists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure l isa front plan view of my improved envelop. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the position of the flaps before being sealed. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the seslot 4, and the lower flap 3 carries a securing-tongue 5, formed integral therewith, said tongue carrying a gummed portion 6, which extends at an angle to the lower portion of the tongue 5.
The operation of my improved envelop is as follows: The envelop being formed in the usual manner with side flaps and an upper flap 2 and lower flap 3, the letter is placed within the envelop and the upper flap Zsealed in position in the usual manner, the tongue 5 extending to a slot 4, the gummed portion 6 being inserted therethrough and sealed to the inner face thereof. In this manner the envelop is secured in such a manner that it will be impossible to open the same without detection.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved envelop will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be noted that various changes as to the securing-tongue may be made without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Paient, is-
In an envelop, the combination of side flaps, an upper flap having a slot formed therein below the gummed surface thereof, a lower flap, a tongue formed integral with the upper end of said lower flap, a gummed extension formed integral with said tongue and extending at an angle thereto, the outer face of said upper flap being engaged by said tongue when the upper flap is sealed, the said gumrned extension extending through said slot and secured to the inner face of said upper flap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GABRIEL E. BILDERBACK.
