ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented a is, iaic.
Application filed March 2, 1915. Serial No. 11,611.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLIE G. CoMBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gum Neck, in the county of Tyrrell and State of North Carolina, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Envelope; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to envelops, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an envelop constructed so that malicious tampering with the contents of the envelop may be easily detected.
Another object of this invention is to provide an envelop as specified which has a plurality of tongues formed upon the edges of the side flaps which coact with the end flaps for forming one wall of the envelop body, which tongues are provided for insertion through the end flaps and the sealing flap of the envelop and outwardly over the sealing flap, for sealing or adhesive engagement with the address face of the envelop.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank of which the envelop is constructed. Fig. 2 is a view showing the rear side of the envelop in a sealed condition, and Fig. 8 is a view of the address side of the envelop in a sealed condition.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the envelop, the outer surface of which forms the address surface of the envelop, and which body has substantially triangular end flaps 9. and 3 secured to the ends thereof, and side flaps 4: and 5 secured to its side edges. The side flap 5, which forms the sealing flap of the envelop, has a section of its inner surface, along its outer marginal edge gummed, as is shown at 6, with any suitable type of adhesive, commonly employed in the construction of envelops. The side flap 4, which coacts with the end flaps 2 and 3 for forming the rear wall of the body of the envelop, has a plurality of tongues 7, 8 and 9 formed thereon and extending outwardly from its marginal edges. The tongue 8 is formed at the apex of the side flap 4a, which side flap is substantially triangular shape 1n plan, and the tongues 7 and 9 extend outwardly from the edge of the flap 4; a short distance outwardly from the tongue 8 upon each side of the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
Each of the end flaps 2 and 3 are provided with parallel disposed slots 10 and 11, and the sealing flap 5 has a slot 12 extending therethrough. When the envelop is in a sealed condition, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the flap 7 is inserted through the slots 10 and 11 formed in the end flap 2, and it has its outer end bent over the upper edge of the envelop body, and secured to the upper edge of the address side of the envelop, as is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The tongue 9 is inserted through the slotslO and 11 formed in the end flap 3, and it extends upwardly over the outer surface of the sealing flap 5, and has its upper end bent over and secured to the ad dress side of the envelop. The tongue 8 extends upwardly through the slot 12 formed in the sealing flap, and is also secured to the address side of the envelop. The tongues 7, 8 and 9 have the inner surface of the outer ends gummed, as is shown at 15, for facilitating the securing of the ends of the tongues to the address side of the envelop. The tongues 7 and 9 extend over the line of engagement between the marginal edges of the sealing flap 5 and the rear wall of the envelop body which is formed by the coaction of the end flaps 2 and 3 with the side flap 4.
When the envelop is sealed, in the manner heretofore described, and the ends of the various tongues 7, 8 and 9 are secured to the address side of the envelop, it will be seen that the malicious opening of the envelop for examination of the contents will be rendered difficult and practically impossible, owing to the inconvenience of removing the tongues, without mutilation thereof.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed is An envelop including a body, substantially triangular end flaps formed upon the flap, said end fiapshaving pairs ofislots formed therein to receive the end tongues and said sealing flap having a slot to receive the center tongue said tongues having their outer ends turned Over the edge ofthe envelop and being secured to the outer surface 15 of the body.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
