NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK PARKER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN. V
SUPPQRTING DEVICE FOR TROUSERS, 84o.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,863, dated November 5, 1901. Application filed December 19, 1900- Serial No. 40,393. (No model.)
To atZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK PARKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting Devices for Trousers, (to, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in supporting devices for trousers, whereby the use of the ordinary suspenders or belts may be dispensed with, and has for its object to make an invisible supporting device which will not bind or cut across the front or back of the wearer and can be made a part of the trousers or detachable therefrom, whereby the trousers will be freely supported from the hips of the wearer and the unsanitary and injurious effects of wearing a belt dispensedwith. To this end my invention consists in the use of a belt having stiffening members adapted to fit over the hips of the wearer and support the trousers therefrom.
The invention further consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation with parts broken away, showing my supporter as in use. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line a: as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the supporter detached. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line a 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 shows a modified construc- Fig..6 isan elevation and section through one of the stiffening members.
As shown in the drawings, A is a belt encircling the waist of the wearer and provided with one or more buckles afor adjusting the same to the person. On opposite sides of this belt and directly over the hip portions are the stiffening members B, preferably sewed within the belt and of a length so that in adjusting the belt to the wearer no great pressure will be brought to bear upon the abdomen or back of the wearer, which is so injurious and has such a distressing efiect upon the wearer. These members B are preferably oval in cross-section, as shown, so as to give a large bearing-surface, and their ends are slightly flexible, so as to give a'graceful curve to the trousers-tops. Depending from each side of this belt and directly below the stifiening members are the triangular flaps 0, provided at their lower ends with hooks b' for attaching to the trousers and suspending the same therefrom, although hooks may be provided at the two upper corners, if desired. I also preferably cut out the center of this flap at 0, so that it may fit over the protruding end of the pelvis or hip portion, and 61 represents flexible stays sewed into this flap, so that it will fit properly over the hip of the wearer, as shown in Fig. l, orI may make the stiffening member of one piece of wire, as shown in Fig. 5, the trousers being suspended from its lower corner or all three corners, as desired, by means of buttons slipped into the opposite corners thereof. I may arrange the stays as shown in Fig. 3 to better fit the protruding pelvis of the wearer, such obvious changes being deemed within 7 the spirit of my invention. It will thus be seen that the stiffening members may be put directly into the waistband of the trousers, where the trousers are made to order, as the waistband can then be made to act as the belt, or I may and preferably do support the trousers from the lowermost point of the triangular flaps, thus leaving the top of the trousers loose and free from undue pressure across the front and back. I also preferably make the stiffening members so that they can be readily bent to conform to the shape of the wearer and still not lose their elasticity, the essential feature of my invention being a stiffening member formed integral with the trousers or detachable therefrom and adapted to fit over the hips of the wearer and support the trousers therefrom.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The combination with a pair of trousers, of a belt adapted to be detachably secured to the trousers and about the waist of the wearer, of rigid stiffening members secured to the upper edge of the belt on opposite sides thereof and adapted to fit over the hip portions, flaps depending from the lower edge thereof and means for supporting the trousers there from. a
3. The combination with a pair of trousers,
of a belt adapted to be secured about the waist of the wearer and support the trousers therefrom, of inwardly-curved stiffening members secured in the opposite sides thereof and I adapted to fit over the hips of the wearer and Z project in front and rear thereof, flaps depending from said belt and having an opening adapted to fit over the protruding pelvis,
and means for suspending the trousers therefrom.
4. In a trousers-support, the combination of a belt adapted to be adjustably secured about the waist of the wearer, of stiffening members carried by said belt on opposite sides thereof, and shaped to conform to the hips of the wearer, and of a length to hold the belt from unduly pressing against the abdomen or back of the wearer, of depending triangular flaps carried by said belt on opposite sides thereof adapted to lie over the hips of the wearer, V- shaped stiffening members sewed in said flaps and means for supporting the trousers from the lower end of said flaps.
5. In a supporting device for trousers, the combination of a pair of stiffening members, adapted to fit over the hips of the wearer and project in front and rear thereof, to prevent excessivev pressure across the abdomen and back of the wearer, a belt for adj ustably uniting said members, and means for detachably supporting the trousers from said belt.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK PARKER.
