UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT N. BAKER, OE SYRACUSE, NEW YORK; EMMA BAKER, A MINISTRA- TRIX OF SAID ROBERT N. BAKE DECEASED, ASSIGNOR TO SYRACUSE CHILLED PLOW COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WHEELBARROW.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 673,354, dated April 30, 1901.
Application filed May 28, 1897. Serial No. 688.524. (No model.)
To all whom i7; may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT N. BAKER, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wheelbarrows, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in :0 wheelbarrows, and has for its object the production of a device which is particularly economical in manufacture and durable and efficient in use; and to this end the invention consists in the combination, construction, and
arrangement of the component parts of a barrow or tray for a wheelbarrow, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 are respectively a top 2 5 plan, a side elevation, and an inverted plan, of
my improved barrow or tray, a portion thereof being shown in section in Fig. 1; and Figs. 4.
and 5 are detail sectional views taken, respectively, on lines 4 4 and 5 5, Figs. 2 and 1.
My improved tray preferably consists of front and rear pieces a a and a bottom a composed of sections a at The front and rear pieces at a extend crosswise of said tray and incline upwardly from their adjacent or lower edges, as best seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
Said sections a a of the bottom a are arranged one in advance of the other between the adjacent or lower edges of the front and rear pieces a a, and said sections and the adjacent or lower edges of the front and rear pieces a a are extended upwardlyin opposite directions from their central portions. The outer lengthwise edges of the sections a a are engaged with the inner faces of the front and rear pieces ct a and are firmly secured to said inner faces by any suitable fastening means unnecessary to describe herein. The
contiguous or adjacent lengthwise edges of the sections a a are provided with longitudlmeans 0;".
nal Overlapping shoulders a which are usu- 5o ally formed by rabbets in said edges.
In the usual construction of my invention the sections a a are secured together by fastening members a and are provided with inwardly-extending grooves a in their end faces, which receive retaining-strips a secured in position by any desirable fastening Said fastening members a are substantially U-shaped and are secured to the lower face of the bottom a being here shown as arranged crosswise of the contiguous lengthwise edges of the sections a of, with their ends a inserted into the sections a a at opposite sides of said contiguous edges and disposed out of alinement with the ends of the next adjacent fastening members,
, as best seen in Fig. 3. Said sections a a may be additionally secured together by cleats a unnecessary to describe herein.
A tray of the described construction is eco- 7o nomical in manufacture, as comparatively narrow andinexpensive wood may be used in forming its bottom 0?, and is particularly du rable and efficient in use, since when subjected to the elements the shoulders a permit expansion and contraction of the tray without separation of the outer lengthwise edges of the sections a a from the front and rear pieces a a or separation of the contiguous edges of said sections. Moreover, said expansion and contraction of the tray are not retarded to any appreciable extent by the fastoning members a and as said tray is free to expand and contract,as described, checking or splitting of its ends is reduced to a minimum, 8 this result-being additionally attained by the retaining-strips a The construction of my tray for wheelbarrows will now be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, and it will be particularly noted that the fastening members and the retaining'strips may be dispensed with if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture,
a tray for a wheelbarrow, the same being provided with a bottom composed of sections extended upwardly in opposite directions from their central portions, and having their contiguous lengthwise edges formed with longitudinal overlapping shoulders for permitting expansion and contraction of said bottomwithout separation of said contiguous edges of the sections, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a tray for a wheelbarrow, the same being provided with upwardly-extending front and rear pieces, and a bottom composed of sections extended upwardly in opposite directions from their central portions, and having their outer lengthwise edges secured to said front and rear pieces, and their contiguous lengthwise edges formed with longitudinal overlapping shoulders for permitting expansion and contraction of said bottom without separation of the outer lengthwise edges of said sections from the front and rear pieces, or separation of said contiguous edges of the sections, substantially as described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a tray for a wheelbarrow, the same being provided with a bottom composed of sections extended upwardly in opposite directions from their central portions, and having inwardly-' extending grooves in their end edges, said sections having their contiguous lengthwise edges formed with longitudinal overlapping shoulders for permitting expansion and contraction of said bottom without separation of said contiguous edges of the sections, and retaining-strips arranged longitudinally within said grooves, substantially as described.
4 As an improved article of manufacture, a tray for a wheelbarrow, the same being provided with a bottom composed of sections ex tended upwardly in opposite directions from their central portions, and having their contiguous lengthwise edges formed with longi tudinal overlapping shoulders for permitting expansion and contraction of said bottom without separation of said contiguous edges of-the sections, and substantially U-shaped fastening members secured to the lower face of the bottom and arranged crosswise of the contiguous lengthwise edges of the sections of the bottom with their ends inserted into the sections at opposite sides of said contiguous edges, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 24th day of May, 1897.
. ROBERT N. BAKER.
