TO .ALL WHOM IT `MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. GARDINER, of Westerly, in the county of Washington, and State ofRhode Island, have invented a new and improved Clamp for Paint-Brushes, and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
This invention relates to a new and improved clamp to be applied to paint-brushes in order to confine the bristles, so as to prevent an undue spreading of the same.
The invention is designed as a substitute for and an improvement upon the plan now adopted by painters to effect the same end, to wit, the wrapping of' twine around the bristles, which is attended with considerable trouble, and after a brush has been used' and worn down to a certain extent cannot be readily unwound and adapted tosuit the length of the bristles.
My invention consists in using a metal band having its ends connected by a pin and slide or other suitable fastening, the band being connected to adjustable arms, arranged in such a manner as to admit of the band being readily adjusted further up or down on the bristles, as may be desired, as hereinafter fully shown and described. iIn the accompanying sheet of drawingsm Figures 1 and 2 are side-views of paint-brushes having my invention applied to them.
Figures 3 and 4, transversesections of the same, taken respectively in the linesz x, y y, figs. 1 and Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the bristles andB the handle of a paint-brush, constructed in the ordinary or in any proper manner. C represents a band, which may he constructed of sheet metal. Brass would be a good material. This band at one end is perforated with holes a, and the other end is provided with s. pin, b, to fit in any ofthe holes 1, the pin being retained in the hole by aislide, c. By this means the band may be increased or decreased in diameter toisuit the size of the brush. To the band C, at opposite points thereof, there are attached strips or arms D D, (see fig. 1,) which are fitted and allowed to slide in sockets EA E, secured to the head d of the brush;
`and to the outer side of each socket E there is attached a spring, F, having an inward-projecting pin, e; and
these pins pass through any of a series of holes in the sockets and arms D. By this means it will be seen that the bands C are retained in position on the bristles A of the brush; and by pressing the springs F outward, so as to withdraw the pins e from the arms D, the band may be raised and lowered on the bristles, as may be desiredi In iig. 2 a modification of the invention is shown. A strap, G, extends over or across the head d of the brush, and has a hole,f, made ,centrally in it for the handle B to pass through. This strap G extends down at each side, forming arms H H, which are attached to the band C at opposite points; and-springs I I are attached to the band, and extend upward to the head within the arms H, and are bent inward at their upper ends to form catches to t linto any of a series of recesses in the sides of the head d. This is a very simple arrangement, and probably preferable to that shown in fig. 1, as the sockets E might be liable to become choked or clogged up with paint. By depressing" the hand C so as to hatten it the bristles A will assume a ilat form, similar tc a varnish-brush. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent- The combination of the band C, adjusted by means of the slide and pins, with the spring fastener F, for vertical adjustment, substantially as described for the purpose specified,
GEORGE R. GARDINER.
