- JEWELERS SETTING-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, MARTIN L. Hers mean and EDWARD F. SINGER, citizens of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewelers Setting- Holders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple and highly efficient jewelers setting holder, and to such ends, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combination of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings:

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with some parts sectioned and some parts broken away, showing the improved holder;

Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof showing the same on a larger scale than Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a section on the line 38 of Fig. 2, some parts being removed;

Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a so-called anvil removed from the device; and

Fig. 5 is a view corresponding toFig. 4 with some parts sectioned, illustrating a slightly modified form of the anvil.

The improved device comprises a handle 6 and an axially projecting threaded stem 7 shown as secured thereto by a transverse anchor pin 8 which also secures in place on the reduced end of the handle 6 a metallic ferrule 9. The numeral 10 indicates a grapple actuating head that works with screw threaded engagement on the stem 7 and, as shown, has a cylindrical flange telescoped around the ferrule 8. This head 10 works as a nut and is provided with a conical outer end that engages the inner ends of a multi plicity of small grapple levers 11 as shown, three in number, and intermediately pivoted at 12 to a carrier head 18 that also Works as a nut and has threaded engagement with the stem 7 In its outer end the threaded stem 7 has an axial seat that receives the reduced stem 14 of an anvil 15. while the anvil shown in Fig. 5 has an axial passage 17. The said two anvils are interchangeably usable. The anvil shown in Fig. 1 is especially adapted for holding a device such as a shirt-stud or stick pin 18 applied with its laterally projecting needle 19 in the groove 16 and with its head against the face of said anvil. The anvil shown in Fig. 5 is especially adapted for holding a device such as an ear ring which has an axially projecting pin or stem.

The use of the device for holding a stickpin is illustrated in Fig. 1 by referring to which it will be noted that the head of the stick pin is seated as above described against the anvil and the inturned points of the grapple lovers are engaged between the prongs of the head of said stick pin, and thus the stick pin is very firmly held so that the setting can be properly applied thereto.

For the proper application of the grapple levers or fingers and anvil to the settings of difierent dimensions will require various spacing of the anvil from the points of the grapple fingers as well as various different spread between the points of the said fingers. These several adjustments are all provided for in the device described. By rotating the stem 7 in respect to the nut or carrier head 13 the distance between the anvil and the points of the grapple fingers may be varied, and by rotating the said stem in respect to the head 10, the spreader contact of the points of the grapple fingers may be varied. Both these adjustments are accomplished by simple rotation of the handle 6 in respect to the head 13 and grapple fingers.

Preferably the grapple fingers are automatically spread or thrown outward by light coiled springs 20 seated in the said fingers and reacting against the head 13 as shown in Fig. 8.

It is important also to note that the anvil when applied to the outer end of the stem 7 is swiveled thereto so that it does not rotate with the stem while it is engaged with the back of the setting.

What we claim is:

1. A jewelers setting holder, comprising a handle having a rigidly secured projecting threaded stem provided with an anvil at its projecting end, a grapple-carrying head and a grapple-actuating head working independently with threaded engagement on said stem, and both adjustable longitudinally thereof toward and from said anvil, the latter being located outward of both of said heads, and a plurality of grappling-levers pivoted to said carrying head and subject to the spreading action of said actuatinghea 2. A jewelers setting holder comprising a handle having a rigidly secured projecting threaded stein, a grapple-carrying head and a grapple-actuating head working independently with threaded engagement on said stem, and a plurality of grapple levers interinediately pivoted to said carrying head with their'inner ends subject to the spreading action of said actuating-head, said actuating-head having a conical outer portion and an annular flange embracing the adjacent end of said handle.
