MARCUS VANDERHOVEN, OF UTICA, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 67,232, dated July 30. .1867.
IMPROVE) DUST-PAN.
@the Srigehule mmh tu in tigen ettets ntcut mit mating @nrt tt tige same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, MARCUS VANDERHOVEN, of the city of Utica, in the county of 0neida,lin the -Sftate of" New York, have invented a new and improved Mode of Constructing Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declzjfre that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
. Figures l and 2 are perspective views of a. dust-pan constructed according to my invention.
The nature of my improvement consists in so constructing a dust-pan as to give it a desirable, convenient, and suieiently firm position when placed upon the door or carpet, which may be used without the necessity of holding, strengthened, as will be hereinafter described, so that its entire bed will bcikept straight.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
Figs. 1 and 2represent a dust-pan constructed according to my invention, with the diderent parts, which may be of brass, tin plate, iron, or any other material suitable' for the purpose, joined together in any of the usual ways. A represents two uniform Wedgeshaped sides; B represents the back with the handle E attached in the centre; C represents the plane or bed of the pan; D represents the line at which the plane or bed C is securely joined to the sides A and back B with solder, or in any other substantial way. v
It will be readily perceived that my invention differs materially and substantially from all dust-pans made in the Ordin-ary way of turning up the edge of the plate, which does not serve to prevent the pan from curving and twist-ing, and it must necessarily be held in position and its edge pressed into line with the floor or carnet, whilst at some inconvenience and annoyance the dust is swept or brushed upon it, whereas a dust-pan constructed according to my invention, as represented by figs. 1 and 2 und herein fully described, is not liable to'becomer curved, twisted, or sprung, the bed or plane C being supported upon both its sides by being frmlyjoined to the sides A and back B toits extreme edge, and when placed upon the floor, either side up, is always in a desirable, convenient, and firm position 'for use, without the necessity of holding, or other inconvenience. The annoyance from dust whilst stooping to hold the pan is entirely avoided. y
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The mode of connecting the bed or plane C with the sides A and back B upon their inner surface, at a line nearly or quite central, as represented in figs. and 2, the whole being arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
MARoUs VANDERHOVEN.
Witnesses.
