To ctZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. DAVIDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lenox, in the county of Macomb and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Bran-Duster and Grain-Scourer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved bran-duster and grain-scourer, the object of my invention being to provide a machine of increased efficiency which is adapted for detaching and separating middlings from and finishing bran and which is also efficient for scouring grain.
One feature of my invention is a novel construction of the inclosing case, provided with a discharge opening at the upper side thereof for the bran, at a point remote from the lower side of the screen through which the middlings are passed by the revolving brushes.
Another feature of myinvention is a novel construction of the inclosing case, whereby access may be readily obtained to the interior of the operating mechanism.
Another feature of my invention is the provision of cups which are adapted to be at-.
tached to the revolving element within the screen and to throw and dash the material against the screen by centrifugal force.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bran-duster and grain-scourer em: bodying my improvements with one side of the casing removed, so as to disclose the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 isa detail perspective view of one of the brushes and cups, showing the same attached to an arm of a revolving element. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the hoop-rings for securing the screen in place in the casing. Fig. 6 is a sectional view at right angles to Fig. 2.
The sides 1 of the inclosing case are connected at their corners and at intermediate points vertically by cross-blocks 3, respectively. The sides are provided with bearings, as at 4, for the shaft 5 of the revolving element presently described, and each of the said sides is provided, at a point directly below its respective bearing, with a semicircular opening 6, through which access may be readily obtained to the interior of the casing and the operating mechanism therein. Said openings are adapted to be closed by doors or shutters 7, which fit in said openings and are provided with exterior curved battens 8, which bear against the outer sides of the casing and effectually close the joints between the openings 6 and said doors or shutters 7. Battens 9 are secured to the sides 1 above said openings 6 and bear against the upper portion of said doors or shutters 7, as shown in Fig. 2. Buttons or other suitable devices 10 are provided on the sides 1, which are adapted to engage and lock the doors or shutters when the same are in said openings 6. In one of the sides 1, slightly to oneside of the center and near the upper side thereof, is an inclined inlet-spout 11, through which the vided with hooks or other suitable devicesfas at 13, whereby it may be secured when in position thereon.
Inclined boards 14 are arranged transversely between the sides 1 of the casing and converge downwardly and conduct to an opening 15 in the mill floor and which registers with a suitable conveying-spout, and the upper ends of said boards are connectedto the blocks 3 by means of suitable hooks or other fastening devices, (indicated at 16.) The narrow side of the casing above one of said boards let is closed and continuous, as at 17, and the opposite side thereof is open, as at 18. The said opening 18 is partly closed by a vertical board 19, which is secured to the inner side of the block 3, and to the upper endof said board 19 is secured an inclined deliveryboard 20, which forms the bottom of the brandischarge opening 18 in the upper side of the casing, at one corner thereof. Annular rings 21 are secured on the inner sides of the casing and are concentric with the shaft 5 and provided each with a peripheral groove 22. The screen material 23 is stretched around the said annular ring and is secured thereon by hoop-rings 24, in each of which is included a screw-bolt or turnbuckle or other suitable device for compressing said ring in one of the grooves 22. As here shown, I provide each hoop-ring, which is made of wire, with a bolt 25. The screen is fixed and is stationary within the casing and is open at its upper side, as at 26. This opening 26 communicates with the bran-discharge opening 18 of the casing.
The shaft 5 is provided at one end with a pulley 27, whereby it may be driven from any suitable source of power, and fast on the said shaft at a point midway between the sides of the casing is a hub 28, provided with radial arms 29. Each of the said ,radialarms is provided at its outer extremity with an adjusting slot 30 and brushes 31, which contact with the inner side of the screen and have their heads 32 secured to the said radial arms 29 bymeans of bolts 33, which operate in the adjusting-slots 30, and thereby enable said brushes to be adjusted as may be required. I also provide a series of cups 34, which are preferably constructed as sh own and are each provided with an integral curved spring-arm 35, which is provided with an opening 36, through which the end of one of the radial arms 29 may be inserted, and the outer portion of said arm is disposed between the flattened outer end of the radial arm 29 and one side of the brush-head 32 and is provided with anadjusting-opening 37, through which the bolt 33 passes, and thereby the said arm- 35 is clamped between the outer end of the radial arm 29 of the revolving element and one of the brushes, and the said adjustingslot 37 also adapts the said cup to be adjusted on said radial arm, either with the brush. or independently thereof, as may be required. Each cup 34: is made of metal, preferably of steel, of a single piece, and is bent to form the tion and preventing the bran from settling.
The middlings and particles of fiour pass through the screen and are discharged through the opening 15, while the bran is discharged through the opening 18, which,as will be observed'by reference to the drawings, more particularly to Figs. 1 and 6 thereof, is above the screen and at the point farthest removed from the lower side of the screen through which the major portion of the middlings passes, and the middlings being heavier than the bran and the bran-discharge opening being so remote from the lower side of the screen the separation of the bran from the middlings is complete,and practically none of the middlings is discharged through said opening 18.
Any required screening material may be used, and when an appropriate screen is provided the machine is perfectly adapted for scouring grain, although its primary purpose, as hereinbefore indicated, is for separating middlings and bran and similar uses.
Having thus described my invention, I claim I 1. In a bran-duster and grain-scourer, the combination of a fixed cylindrical screen, a revoluble element therein having brushes engaging the interiorof the screen, and centrifugal cups carried by said revoluble element, said cups having spring-supports, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a screen, a shaft, radial arms, brushes, centrifugal cups provided with arms, and means whereby said radial arms, the arms of the cups, and the brushes are clamped together in the order named, substantially as described.
3. A revoluble element for a bran-duster and grain-'scourer having radial arms, in combination with centrifugal cups each having a supporting-arm provided with an opening through which the outer end of one of said radial arms is inserted and provided further with an adj Listing-opening, and a brush having a bolt projecting from one side of its head and secured in an opening in the radial arm, and in said adjusting-opening in the supporting-arm of the cup, substantially as de scribed. 4. In combination with a screen and a revoluble element having a radial arm, a cup provided with an integral spring-arm having an opening through which an arm of the revoluble element may be inserted and provided further with an adjusting-opening,eand releasable means passing through said arms for clamping them together and permitting their relative adjustment, substantially as described.
