TO ALL WHGM IT MAY CONCERN: A
Beit known that I, JOHN H. LYNCH, of the city and county of Baltimore, and State' of Maryland, have invented anew and useful improved Night-Cart; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, suicient to enable one skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make use of it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and.
in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure is a longitudinal vertical section on the line :v x, fig. 1. i
lThis Vnight-cart is so adjusted upon the axle as to be capable of being tipped backward to discharge its contents at a rear opening when the shutter is opened. The door of the charging opening above as well. as the shutter in the rear has packing-rings, which t their openings tightly, and they are held closed by lever and chain, or rack and pinion, I
In the drawings, A is. the box or body ofA the cart; B is the upper opening, through which the night-soil is emptied into the cart. This is closed by the door C, which is hinged on the upper surface of the cart, and has an elastic packing, D, which, as the door is pressed into the opening, packs it water-tiglitand prevents the escape of the uid or gaseous contents ofthe box. The lid may be constructed as in the drawing in two sections, between which is fastened a thickness of India rubber, which projects beyond the margin of the wood, or it may be otherwise attached; but it is important that the corners of the door be rounded oi`, so that it may more readily pack into the opening when pressed-down. Above the door is a bar, E, which is pressed upon by the pivoted levers F, which are held down by the engagement-of the chain-hooks G with the eyeholts H. The shutter I in the rear is hung upon hinges to the rear of the cart, and is provided with a. packing membrane, J, similar to that described as belonging to the door G on the upperv surface of the cart. The corners of the box are also rounded. It is held close into the opening K by means of the bar L and the ratchet-arms M, which are worked by the pinion Nland crank O, or by a. lever on the pinion-shaft, instead of the crank, if required. A ratchet wheel on the pinion-shaft is engaged by a pawl, and the closed position of the door maintained. The pawl is lifted by crank P when it is necessary to open the door. The cart is filled, as usual, at an opening above, the rear shutter being closely fastened, the upper door is then tightly closed, and on arriving at the spot where the soil is discharged, the cart-box is tipped back, and the shutter opened, which discharges the contents behind. The common practice is to upset the box and discharge'the soil at the opening by which it was charged. The plates,- R R are guides for the arms M, which may hie curved or straight, the guide-plates being suitably arranged to meet the change.l
Having described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The box A, provided at the rear with a. tight-fitting shutter, I, operated by means substantially as described.. v
2. The door C, with packing membrane and rounded corners, and secured substantially as described.
