UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE O. LIPPINCOTT AND GLENN MEREDITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CANDLESTICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,264, dated July 9, 1901.
Application filed March 13, 1901. Serial No. 50,908. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J ESSE O. LIPPINOOTT and GLENN MEREDITH, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candlesticks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists of an improvement in candlesticks whereby the candle is always held in a perpendicular position and whereby the base of the candlestick may serve as a shield or protector for the flame. It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure I represents a perspective view of a candlestick embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of a portion thereof, showing the candle'in a different position.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a candlestick consisting of a base B, having the handles 0 attached thereto. In the drawings the handles arefshown formed of wire, the ends of which project through the base B and are twisted, as at D, and are then extended upwardly and separated, forming the standards E and F, having the deflected portions G, which are adapted to enter openings in the ring H, which is attached to the candle-socket J, said ringbeing adapted to turn on said deflected portion G as a journal. The lower portion of the socket J is heavier than the upper portion, so that the candle will always remain in upright position. The socket J has a spring K therein and being provided with a cap L, adapted to be locked to said socket J, which is'provided with an opening through which the wick M of the candle projects, said spring being adapted to hold the candle in the proper position. An opening N is provided in the base, so that the same can be hung up, if desired.
It will be evident that by this construction the candle will always maintain an upright position no matter how the base is held, and if the parts are in a position as shown in Fig. 2 the base will act as a protector for the flame.
While we have described the construction as shown, it will vbe evident that various changesmay be made therein that will come within the scope of our invention, and we do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction as herein shown and described.
Having thus described our invention,what
we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a candlestick, a base, handles attached thereto formed of wire, having the ends projecting through said base and extending upwardly forming standards, deflected portions on said standards and a candle -socket having openings therein which engage with said deflected portions.
2. In a candlestick, abase, handles attached
