ALONZO IINTLEY, OF HADLEY, ILLINOIS.
SPRING-GUN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,771, dated May 21, 1901.
Application led May 10, 1900. Serial No. 16,142. (No model?) To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO HUNTLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at l-Iadley, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Guns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to spring-guns.
The object of the invention is to provide a gun of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and thoroughly eliioient in operation.
IVith this objectin view the invention consists in a spring-plunger for expelling a projectile, means for retracting the same and for holding it retracted, and an adjustable stop for limiting the forward thr'ow of theretracting means.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a part of agun-stock illustrating my invention, the hammer being thrown back and the spring-actuated plunger being compressed, as shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation ot' the complete gun.
In the drawings, l denotes a portion of the barrel of a gun, one side of the lock-case plate being removed, and 2 denotes the bore. Arranged within this barrel is a spring-actuated plunger 3.
+L denotes the hammer, pivoted in a recess in the stock and connected to the rear end of the spring-actuated plunger by a straight cord or thong 7.
S denotes a pivoted trigger which is provided with a notch 9 to engage the toe of the hammer and which will hold the hammer cocked.
lO denotes a spring secured to the side of the loek-oase and having one end bent, as at l1, and projecting info a longitudinal recess 12 in the side of the lock-ease and bearing against the upper end of the trigger to force it rearwardly. This spriugis provided with an aperture I3 at its bend, through which extends a stop-screw 14, arranged in the path of movement of the hammer. This screw acts as a stop for the hammer, thus regulating the throw of the spring-actuated plunger, and consequently the distan ce of the throw ot' the projectile. By working the screw inwardly the spring-plunger is given a greater range of movement, and consequently the projectile will be hurled a greater distance than it would be when the screw is worked out rear- Wardly.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring an extended explanation.
The device is exceedingly useful for the purpose for which it is designed and may be placed upon the market at a comp 'atively small cost.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details ot construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a spring-gun, the combination with a stock and its barrel, of a spring-actuated plunger located within the barrel, a hammer, a flexible connection between the spring-actuated plunger and the hammer, a trigger adapted to engage a toe projecting from the hammer and hold it cocked, a spring-plate secured to the stock and projecting within the path of the trigger to force it rearwardly, and an adjustable stop arranged within the path of movement of the hammer to regulate the throw of the spring-actuated plunger, substantially as set forth.
2. In a spring-gun, the combination With a stock and its barrel, of a spring-plunger for expelling a projectile, means t'or retracting the same and for holding it retracted, and an adjustable stop forlimiting the forward throw of the retracting means, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALONZO HUNTLEY.
