Beit known that I, lVIAX MATTES, of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Vizor for Gaps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to construct a vizor for caps which will be thoroughly waterproof, which may be folded or rolled without injury, and which will be stable, yet possess required elasticity.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved vizor, and Fig. 2 is a section through a portion of the vizor.

Heretofore vizors have been constructed of leather, which material is liable to crack or become damaged by exposure to the elements. I am also aware of a material which contains rubber to a greater or less extent, but is not suitable for the purpose for which my im proved material is intended, as it is almost impossible to sew the combination rubber material to a fabric, since a fine needle is required, especially where the vizor is to be attached to the body of the cap and the work of sewing is performed upon what is known as a family sewing-machine, and the rubber ofiers such resistance to the needle that it is liable to become broken or to become clogged to such an extent that it cannot be forced into the material.

The improved vizor is constructed of a material which consists of a body A of felt, and the felt is rendered impervious to water by applying to the top and bottom surfaces of the felt coverings or facings B and G of enamel, the enamel being applied in layers until the requisite protection is obtained. The felt employed is compressed after being provided with a sizing or a paste, intended to stifien the felt toacertain extent, and both the upper and the lower faces of the felt are then covered with an evenly-distributed mixture of lampblack and oil, so as to prepare a foundation upon which the enamel surfaces are to be built. By covering the felt with lampblack and oil the felt becomes saturated with the same and all its pores become filled up, so that an even surface is formed when the felt is dried and the enamel which is afterwards applied does not soak in. Furthermore, the lampblack and oil help to make the material a jet black, when formerly all vizors had to be blackened on the edge with ink or the like. When my article is prepared, a jet-black raw edge is exposed (the enamel being on the upper and lower faces only) which closely resembles the edge of leatherand gives the vizor a substantial and pleasing appearance.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described vizor for a cap, consisting of a piece of felt provided with a sizing to stifien it, and compressed, the sized and compressed felt being saturated with lampblack and oil, and having its top and bottom surfaces coated with successive layers of enamel, the edges of the felt being left raw or devoid of enamel, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a vizor for a cap consisting of a body of compressed felt having its pores filled with a black coloring-matter and its faces covered and protected by enamel, the edges being left raw or devoid of enamel and presenting an appearance resembling that of leather, substantially as set forth.
