Description
.SOL'GMON` H. GOLDBERG, DE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WATERPROOF ROOFING PRODUCT AND PROCESS OFMAKING- THE SAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 6, 1914s l Application led July 1I,y ,llf Serial No. 571,285.
T 0 all whomI it may cm1/ern Be it known that I, SOLOMON H. GOLD- eirizc, a'citizen of the United States, residing in the city" of Chicago, county of Cook,
and State of Iliinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Water proof RoongProducts and Processes of Making the Same, of which the following is aspecification. v
This invention relates to improvements in waterproof roofing products and process of' making the saine, andhas,` among its salient objects to provide a pre-formed prod- Yuct which is colored symmetrically with any of a single continuous process; to provide a process by. which the roofing may be tinted or colored with any desired design of `a single color or of variegated colors and in which the figures f the design may be formed symmetrically and with absoluteaccuracy; to provide an improved process of the character referred to in which the tinting or coloring is applied whilethe roofing is still heated, thereby permitting the coloring to be more intimately associated and mixed with the facing of the roong; to providean improved process which can be very economically carried out and in general to provide improvements of the character referred to.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the single figure of the draw ing, I have shown the upper face view of a portion of roofing made in accordance with my invention. This roofing preferably consists of a flexible foundation such as felt to which is applied a facing of gravel, sand or other comminuted material of a generally similar nature. In practice the felt or foundation material is run through a suitable vat and saturated with a heated asphaltic solution and the gravel then applied. The
coated web is then run through suitable' pressing rolls. ll'hil'e still in its heated condition the web f roofing is run through a pair of rollers, one.of which is provided with 50 tinting or printing forms. The paint or tint 'applying form is provided with raised designs. various designs are applied to the facing of the roofing symmetrically ,and accurately and while the roofing is still in its heated condition. The nature-oit' the facing is such that itcan be much more accurately and e'llectively tinted Ior colored while in a heated condition and the tinting or coloring matter also more effectively unites and mixes with the asphaltic solution with which the facing is mixed. It has been found in practice that the roofing so coated not only permits of a much more accurate design aiid more possible variations in colorings and arrangements of the same, but also that such roofing can be manufactured at a` relatively low cost. In addition the coloring will not run `when subjected to weather exposure.
For purposes of illustration reference may be had to the accompanying drawing in which the single figure shows an upper face view of a. portion of a rooting, the facing 1 of which is formed of screened gravel, which is tinted with va plu ality of designs symmetrically applied, a portion of the designs, as'Q, being in red4 and another1 portion'` in green.
I am aware that webs of stock of various kinds have been heretofore provided with various designs, such as linoleums and also that heretofore a roofing has been provided proc `1es, as far as I know, have ever succeeded m producing a prepared roofing provided with colored designs, the designs'being formel simultaneously with `the forniation of the roofing itself.
The constriiction is such that the Y 'lho invention is not limited to the details ible strip of roofing 'material comprising a with thev interposed spaces and forming 10 foundation of pliable absorbent fabric, a designs, said coloring material being intibitu'minoiis 1Water proof binder associated mately associated with the binder and .form- 'with the face of the fabric, a facing of graning` a covering and an intimate union with 5 ular material adhesively secured in place in `the surfaces 'to which it is applied.
the 'bindenA and having portions projecting SOLGMON H. GOLDBERG. above the surface thereof and a Water proof Vitnesses:
coloring material applied to a plurality of MARK D. GOODMAN,
fields or areas of the facing, contrasting E. R. VVINSLOW.
