" rrn Sra'rns WILLIAM S. MOFERREN, OF NEW FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO HARRY R. MOFERREN, OF SAME PLACE.
SPRlNG-CLEVIS FOR PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 668,925, dated February 26, 1901.
Application filed December 22,1900. serial No. 40,752- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that 1, WILLIAM S. MoFERRnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Franklin, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring-Glevises for Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spring-clevises for plows; and the object of the same is to produce a device of this character which can be attached to aplow to relieve the sudden strain caused by the striking of the plow point against some obstruction, such asaconcealed stone or stump. With this object in view I have devised the simple and novel construction which is fully described in this specification and claimed, and illustrated in the accom panying drawings,forn1ing a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device with part broken away. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in both views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates an integral head which has perforated cheeks 2 and rearwardlyextending arms 3, pivoted on a cross-pin 4:, which extends transversely through the forward end of a plow-beam 5. Bythis arrangement the head is free to move about the pin 4 as an axis. A series of perforations 2 in the cheeks 2 allow a range of adjustment for a clevis 6, which is pivoted on a pin 7, extending through two of the perforations 2. The back of the clevis 6 is also provided with a set of perforations 6, which furnish attachment for asecond clevis 7, to which the doubletree is attached. To provide a bearing on the head 1 for a spring 8, a cross-bar 9 is socured between the upper portion of the two cheeks 2. On this bar 9 is mounted a dishfaced disk 10, Within which fits the lower end of the spiral spring 8. The upper end of the spring 8 bears against a cross-bar 11, which is adjustably mounted on the arms 12 of a yoke 13. The adjustment of the bar is accomplished by nuts 12, fitted on the ends of the arms 12, and the yoke is secured to the under side of the beam 5 by a bolt It, passed through an aperture in the crossbar 15 of the yoke. Space enough is left between the beam 5 and the arms 12 to permit the movement of the arms 3; but the downward movement is limited by the bar 15. To make my structure complete, some details are added in the shape of a brace l6,bearing on a cross-bar l7, connecting the arms 12, and a rod 18,f0oted in the disk 10 and bar 9 and mounted to slide in the cross-bar 11. This rod 18 serves as a guide and also secures the spring 8, which surrounds it, against sidewise displacement.
When in use, the team is hitched to the clevis 7, as beforestated. The spring Sis adjusted by the nuts 12 to a compression equal to a normal pull of the team. Therefore any unusual strain which is brought to bear on the clevis by the plows striking an obstacle, as before mentioned, will'compress the spring. The head 1 will be rotated about its axis, thereby relieving the strain on the beam 5. After the crisis has passed the spring 8 will restore the head to its normal position in contact with the bar 15.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, substantially as described, with a plow-beam, of a head pivoted to the forward end of said beam, a yoke rigidly secured to said beam, a bar adjustably mounted on the arms of said yoke, and a spring hearing at one end against said yoke and at the other end against said head.
2. The combination, substantially as described, with a plow-beam, of a head having rearwardly -extending arms pivoted to the forward end of said plow-beam, a yoke mounted on said plow-beam and having upwardlyextending arms, said yoke being positioned to limit the movement of said head in one direction, a bar adj ustably mounted on the said arms of said yoke, and a spring hearing at one end against said head and at the other end against said bar.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM S. MOFERREN.
