JAMES A. TAYLOR, OF W'ACO, KENTUCKY.
IPLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
raten-eea oet. 1a, 191e.
Application filed October 21, 1914. Serial No. 867,814.
To all 'whom it may concern.'-
Be it known that I, JAMES A. TAYLOR, citizen' of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of Madison. and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in agricultural implements and more particularly to plows.
The primary object of this invention is the construction of a plow with a means for adjusting the depth of plowing. l
Another object of this invention is the provision of a plow having an adjustable clevis.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described' and claimed. l
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a plow with my invention applied, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the adjustable clevis, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the adjusting mechanism, Fig. 4: is a. vertical section on the line 11-11 of Fig. 3, and, Fig. 5 is a detail of the casting.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the numeral 1 indicatesa plow beam of ordinary construction having the handles 2 secured to the rear end thereof. Secured to the underside of the'beam is the ordinary plow point 3 having the mold board A and landside 5, all of the usual construction. A clevis 6 of well known construction is secured to the forward end of the beam and is corrugated on the front face, as shown. Pivotally connected to the beam, at 7, is an adjustable clevis 8 having the upwardly extending portion 9 and this clevis 8 is provided on the forward end with elongated openings 10, which are arranged at a slight angle, as shown. A draft ring 11 is secured to the adjustable clevis by means of a bolt 12 passing through the elongated openings and when draft is applied the bolt 12 engages the corrugations in lthe yface of' the clevis 6. By this construction the strain is placed upon the bolt 12 and old form of clevis and is taken from the pivot pin 7 of the adjustable clevis.
A casting 13 having a longitudinal threaded bore therethrough is secured to the top of the beam 1 and a hollow threaded shaft v11 engages and passes through the threaded bore in the casting. A hand wheel 15 is secured on the rear end of the threaded hollow shaft for turning the same. A rod 16 extends through the hollow threaded shaft and is secured in position by means of a nut 17. On the opposite end of the rod 16 is a casting `18 and' a rod 19 is connected tothe castingV and to the upwardly extending portion of the adjustable clevis 8.
It will be seen that by rotating the hollow threaded shaft it moves longitudinally through the casting 13 thereby pulling or pushing upon the rod 19 and raising or lowering the adjustable clevis 8.
Various changes in the form, proportion Vand minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the prinoiple or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
l/Vhat I claim is:
In a plow, a beam, a clevis iiXedly secured to the beam and coperating with the fixed clevis, a casting mounted on the beam having a threaded openingv therethrough, and exteriorly threaded hollow shaft adjustably mounted in the opening, a rod passingl through said hollow shaft, said shaft being rotatable independently of said rod, means to retain said rod and said shaft against relative longitudinal movement, a rod connecting said first mentioned rodand said adjustable clevis, and means to rotate said shaft; whereby longitudinal movement willy be transmitted to said first mentioned rod as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
