DAVID R. WVATSON, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
CIGAR-PIPE AND INHALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 652,987, dated July 3, 1900. Application filed October 28,1899. $erialNo. 735,119. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID R. WATSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Washington, in the District of O0- lumbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Pipes and Inhalers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to combined cigarpipes and inhalers; and it has for one object to provide a receptacle adapted to contain medicaments which are .removably placed therein, the receptacle also serving the purpose of a cigar-pipe when said medicaments are displaced. 'I have found in practice that by inhaling atmospheric air through the device the lungs are greatly benefited, especially as the discharge of the air through the inhaler is retarded by suitable mechanism, thus requiring a pressure, resulting in the exercisepf the lungs. By this means the pure air is supplied in greater quantities than is usual by natural respiration.
A further object of the invention is to provide a filtering agent in or near the mouthpiece of the cigar-pipe to prevent dust or other impurities from gaining access to the lungs.
Furthermore, it is my purpose to decorate the exterior of the pipe to represent a cigar with ashes on the end and to have the con-1 tour resemble that of a cigar, so that to the casual observer the user will seem to be smoking one.
Finally, the object of the invention is to pro vide a device of the character noted in which the parts will be durable and efficient, satisfactory in use, and comparatively inexpenslve. I
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts, to be hereinafter more f ully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying dra vin gs, forming part of this specificationgfvherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a cigarpipe embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plug and valve.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the central portion of the device, which consists of .a cylindrical body, the bore at each end being of greater diameter than the bore of the remainder of the body, by which means the shoulders 2 2 are formed. A mouthpiece 3 has a flange 4 fitting within one end of the body, and-it may be held therein by frictional contact; but I have here shown the engaging parts as threaded. The mouthpiece is hollow and contains a sponge 5 or other filtering agent, which will serve to arrest the nicotine of the tobacco or the dust and other impurities of the air. The opposite end of the body is provided with a plug 6,havinga flange 7 fitted in the end of the body, as described in connection with the mouthpiece. The plug is perforated for the admission of air for giving draft to the pipe or for supplying air to the lungs when used as an inhaler or respi rater. At the inner end of the plug a valve 8 is seated, and it is of such diameter as to cover and control the perforations, so as to prevent the passage of air therethrough when the user exhales. Apertures 9 are provided in the wall of the body for the escape'of air;
but the size of such apertures is such as to retard the flow and permit onlya gradual escape and requiring a pressure from the lungs to efiect a complete discharge. A valve-stem 1O fits in a central aperture of the plug,and the cross-bar l1 limits the outward movement of the valve to prevent its being unseated.
I prefer to form the invention of asbestos and in the proportions and details of construction as shown, although it will be understood that they may be varied without departing from the scope of the claim.
) Having fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- In a device of the character described, a the head for limiting the movement of the cylinder, a mouthpiece containing a filtering valve. 10 agent, said cylinder having holes at the end In testimony whereof I affix my signature opposite the mouthpiece, a perforated plug in the presence of two witnesses.
fitted to the end opposite the mouthpiece, a DAVID R. WATSON. valve for controlling the perforations having Witnesses: a head, a valve-stem seated in a central ap- S. A. TERRY,
ertnre of the plug, and a cross-bar engaging GEO. E. TERRY.
