Be it known that I, HENRY CALVIN HOP- KINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lithonia, in the county of De Kalb and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Trousers-Hanger, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in trousers-hangers.

One object of the present invention is to improve the construction of trousers-hangers and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device adapted to be readily attached to a wall or other suitable support and capable of readily engaging a pair of trousers at the bottoms thereof and of holding them in an inverted position, whereby they will retain their proper shape and be maintained in good condition without inconvenience.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily opened to receive the trousers and which may be readily adjusted to vary its clamping power to adapt it for holding one or more pairs of trousers.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trousers-hanger constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.

1 designates an inner or rear clamping-bar, forming the back of the device and provided at its ends with perforations 2 for the reception of screws or other suitable fastening devices for securing it to the door of a wardrobe or to a wall or other suitable support, and it may be ornamental in its character, as will be readilyapparent. The back, which is provided with an inner or front flat face 2, cooperates with a front clamping-bar 3 and is connected to the same by a pair of transversely-disposed coiled springs 4, arranged between the upper and lower edges of the front and rear bars, as clearly illustrated in' Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. The rear or 1nner ends of the coiled springs are secured by suitable fastening devices 5 in openings 6 of the rear clamping-bar, and the front ends of the springs are passed through openings 7 of the front or outer clamping-bar and are secured to the same by removable pins 8 or other suitable fastening devices. The outer face of the front clamping-bar is preferably made ornamental, and the removable pins or keys 8, which engage the outer face of the front clamping-bar, extend across the openings 7 and are passed through or between the coils of the springs 4, and by arranging them at different points oil the springs the tension of the latter may be varied and the device adapted for the reception ofone or more pairs of trousers.

The inner engaging faces of the front and rear clamping-bars are preferably provided with pads 9 and 10, adapted to engage the garments without injuring the same. The garments are placed in the hanger in an inverted position, the bottoms thereof being placed between the padded clamping-bars, and in order to enable the latter to be readily separated to permit the introduction and removal of a garment the front clamping-bar is provided with asuitablehandle 12, preferably hinged, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, to enable it to fold compactly against the device; but any other suitable handle or grip may be employed for this purpose. The device is preferably provided with a hat-support 13, constructed of wire or other suitable material and secured to and extending from the inner or rear clampingbar. This hat-support, which may be of any desired c'onfigu ration, is illustrated in the drawings as being approximately V-shaped, being provided at its outer end or apex with a coil 14 and having the terminals of its sides embedded in the rear clamping-bar at the upper edge thereof; but the hat-support may be variedin construction and omitted,if desired.

It will be seen that the trousers-hanger is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it may be compactly arranged in a wardrobe, closet, or other place, and that it is adapted to be readily held in an open position for the convenient introduction and removal of trousers. The particular arrangement of the coiled springs aifords a convenient means for varying the tension thereof fastening devices passing between the coils of the springs and regulating the tension thereof, substantially as described.

2. A device of the class described comprising front and rear clamping -bars, coiled springs secured at their inner ends to the rear clam ping-bar and extending through the front clampingbar, and fastening devices passing between the coils of the springs and engaging the front clamping-bar to regulate the tension of the springs and vary the capacity of the device, substantially as described.
