W. D. HORN.
NECKWEAR RETAINER.
(Application filed Mav 21, 1900.)
(No Model.)
"Nrrnn STATES WILLIAM O. HORN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NECKWEAR-RETAIN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,177, dated September 18, 1900.
' Application filed May 21.1900. SerialNo.1'7,329. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. HORN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neckwear-Retainers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a neckwear-retainer formed. of a bar with lips or bills connected therewith, said bills being so disposed that they may engage the lower edge of a collar and so prevent the article of neckwear from rising or upward displacement, and they are elastic, so that the bow, tie, or other article of neckwear may be held close to the collar and avoiding exposure of the collar-button, the retainer also remaining true on the collar, the construction of the bills, furthermore, permitting the bar to be made of light and pliable material, while beingstrengthened by the same.
Figure 1 represents a rear View of a necktie and a retainer thereon embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent views of opposite faces of the retainer. Fig. 4 represents a section on line a; 0:, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a perspective View of the bar of the retainer in primary condition.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a plate or bar having openings A therein at opposite ends.
B designates bills of the device by which the retainer is attached to a collar, which bills extend upwardly from the lower ends and stand out from the same, as most clearly shown in Fig. 4. The bills are connected with the bar A by means of a doubled shank composed of U -shaped plates formed of limbs O and D, the bends E of which at top resting in the openings A, whereby the bills are suspended from the bar A, said limbs O and D being on opposite sides of the bar and embracing the same, whereby they are firmly retained in position. The bottom limbs F of the plates bear up ward against the lower edge of the bar and so prevent rising of the lips, and consequently displacement of the same from the bar.
The operation is as follows: The retainer is secured to the proper part of the tie so that the bills B are exposed and project upwardly, the bar A in the present case serving to stiffen the band of the tie back of the bow or knot portion thereof. The tie is then adjusted on the collar and the bills are fitted under the lower edge of the neckband of the collar, whereby the front of the tie or the hand thereof, if the retainer is applied to either,(or it may be to both,) is prevented from riding upwardly or bearing irregularly on the edge of the collar, and thus the tie preserves its proper position. The bills are, furthermore, elastic or resilient on the bar and so permit the tie to be held close to the collar and cover and conceal the collar-button. It will also be noticed that the limbs C and D, which are continuous of each other and of the bills, are on opposite sides of the bar A and the bends E and F embrace the walls of the slots A and the lower edge of the bar, and thus strengthen or reinforce the bar, permitting the latter to be made of light and pliable Inaterial, such as pasteboard, cardboard, 85c.
Owing to the openings A the limbs O and D are prevented from lateral shifting, and so the bills are controlled in their set or adjusted position on the bar. Again, the bills and limbs may be formed-of small pieces of metal separate from the bar, so that the size of the latter may be vastly reduced, the saving of which is apparent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A neckwear-retainer formed of a bar of light and pliable material with an opening therein, and a separate attaching device thereon consisting of a downwardly-extending doubled shank, and an upwardly-extending bill, the latter being continuous of one of the limbs of said shank, the limbs of the shank embracing said bar, the top bend of the limbs of the shank resting downwardly on the top wall of said opening and the bottom bend of the bill resting upwardly against the bottom of said bar.
WILLIAM O. HORN.
