FIREPROOF WINDOW.
SPYCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 657,996, dated September 18, 1900.
Application filed February 5, 1900.- Serial No. 4,102. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANK VOIGTMANN and SILAs H. PoMERoY, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State'of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fireproof Windows, of which the followingis a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of windows in which the sash and casing are made of fireproof material and in which the sash is made to close automatically when the fire strikes it.
It consists of details hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a perspective view of our window from the interior. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section al View through the upper portion. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the Weight removed. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the upper portion.
A represents the casing; V.B B, the sash; C, the cord; D, the pulleys; E, the weight, and F the fusible plug.
The casing is made of reproof material, preferably galvanized iron. The sashes are made of similar material and slide up and down in the casing, one being made to balance the other, the cords C being attached to both sashesnear their edges and passing over the pulleys D at each side. In this way the sashesopen and close together, one moving with the other.
The weight E is suspended in the casing, above the lower sash, by means of a fusible plug F. In case of fire the plug is melted and the weight allowed to fall upon the sash, bearing it down, if it happens at the time to be raised, and automatically closing it and at the same time the other sash, with which it is connected through the cord and pulleys.
The fusible plug ismade in any suitable manner which will release the weight on the occurrence of undue heat, but preferably consists of a vertical portion a, which is attached to the casing by a bolt b and which extends through the Weight and has the crosspiece c attached to it below the weightby a fusible soldeigwhich latter will melt o whenthe heat strikes it and allow the weight to slide over a and down along the cords at each end, which run in the guides e e in the weight.
We have shown our invention as applied to a window in which the two sashes are made to balance one another and in which a casement-sash G is hinged in the sliding sash at its outer edges onhinges g.
The hinged sash is designed to be used chiefly for convenience in cleaning the win- /dows from the inside and at other times to be kept closed and locked, as at h.
v It is obvious that instead of applying our invention to the two sliding sashes'connected one with the other, as shown above, it may be applied to the lower one of the ordinary sliding sashes in which a sash-weight is used, the weight which is released being sufficient to overbalance the sash-Weight and-to force "down the sash.
What we claim, and ldesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination. of the fireproof casing A, the ireproof sash B, sliding therein, the
weight E, located above said sash, and the destructible retaining device F, by which said weight is released when iire reaches it; all substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the fireproof casing A, the iireproof sash B sliding therein, the weight E, located above said sash, and the fusible plug F, located in an exposed position, by which said Weight is released when the re reaches said plug; all substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the fireproof casing A, the tireproof sash B, sliding therein, the weight E, located above said sash, having the guides e, e at each end for the sash-cords, and the fusible plug F, by'which said weight is held in place; all substantially as shown and described.
4. lThe combination of the fireproof casing A, the ireproof sashes B, B sliding therein, the cords C, C, connecting said sashes, the pulleys D, D over which said cords pass, the l weight E located so as to fall upon one of said sashes when released, and the destructible retaining device F by which said weight is suspended; all substantially as shown and de.- scribed.
