S?EGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,000, dated January 23, 1900.
Application filed December 20, 1897 Serial No. 662,555. (No model.)
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS O. REED, residing at Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain useful Improvements in Cigars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a denarcotized cigar.
The object of my invention is to provide a cigar with a tasteless and odorless absorber placed near the mouth end of the cigar in the form of a convolute, said absorber being placed upon the tobacco and rolled simultaneously with the cigar.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure I a cigar, within which is positioned one of my nicotine'absorbers While Fig. 2 shows a sectional view disclosing the position of the convolute absorber within the cigar.
My invention comprises, essentially a substance B, preferably of fibrous material, which has been subjected to chemical treatment to make the same tasteless and odorless. This absorber I3 is in the form of a strip which is placed upon the tobacco previous to rolling the cigar, near the month end of the same, and so forms a layer with the tobacco A. Now as the tobacco is rolled to form the cigar the absorber B is curled up with the filler as the cigar is rolled, so that the absorber in the finished article lies in convoluted form within the cigar and between the various tobacco layers near the month end, as is indicated in Fig. 1, where the parallel lines a: to show the location of the absorber.
In the drawings I have shown the absorber 13, comprising a fabric strip approximating three inches in length and about a half-inch in width, which in this form is in the shape of a tape which is rolled up with the tobaccoleaves A as the cigar is made, as has been set forth. Now as the smoke is drawn through the cigar by the user it readily passes through the absorber B, for the reason that the absorber is more porous than the tobacco-leaves proper, and as smoke will pass through the substance of least resistance first it naturally percolates or is drawn through the denarcotized absorber, and in doing so the nicotine is absorbed within this strip, so that the tobacco fumes enter the smokers mouth pure and sweet and free of nicotine.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 represents a cigar provided with my denarcotized absorber, which is positioned, as has been set forth, between the parallel lines a: m, the tobacco being identified by the reference-letter A. In Fig. 2 the cigar is shown in cross-section, disclosing the absorber B in its convoluted form within the cigar.
Now, having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a cigar in combination with an absorber, said absorber being in convoluted form within the cigar near the mouth end and positioned as the cigar is rolled, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS C. REED.
