ISAAC VORON, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
CIGARETTE.
S IPECIFICATIION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,088, dated October 31,- 1899.
Application filed May 22, 1899. Serial No. 717,779. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC VoRoN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigarettes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of cigarettes, the object being to provide a cigarette with a tip or mouthpiece so arranged that practically no nicotine will enter the mouth of the smoker and that the tobacco will not come into contact with the lips of the smoker.
In carrying out my invention I make the cigarette in the ordinary manner, a portion of the case at one end not being filled with tobacco. My improved tip consists of a thimble of suitable materialsuch as paper, cork, or thin sheet metal or foilprovided with a wad of absorbent material, such as felt, blotting-paper, flannel, sponge, or charcoal. This thimble is placed over or in the end of the cigarette, the wad entering the part'of the case not filled with tobacco; The end of the thimble is perforated with one or more holes for the passage of air and smoke, and a strip of suitable materialsuch aspaper, cork,or thin sheet metal or foilis placed around the end of the cigarette to form the mouthpiece.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a cigarette manufactured according to the invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the thimble forming the tip. Fig.4 is an end view thereof, and Fig. 5 is a view of a detail hereinafter described. All these figures are drawn to an exaggerated scale.
a is the cigarette-case, and b is the tobacco, which is filled into the said case in the ordinary manner, except that a portion of the case a is left empty at one end thereof.
0 is the Wad of absorbent material, the said wad being advantageously of felt stamped out of a felt sheet, and d is the cylindrical portion of the thimble, into which the said felt or other wad c isplaced, and which is adapted to be inserted into the empty end of the cigarette-case a, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The thimble is formed, as above mentioned, of suitable material, such as paper, cork, thin sheet metal or foil. It may conveniently be stamped in the form of a blank of star shape, as shown in Fig. 5, the arms-of the star being turned over to form the thimble, as shown in Fig. 3.
d d are the perforations with which the end cl is provided for the passage of air and smoke. I have found it preferable to place a disk e, of muslin or other suitable material, between the wad c and the end (1'.
f is the strip of paper, cork, thin sheet metal or foil, which is placed around the end of the cigarette to form the mouthpiece in the ordinary Way.
With cigarettes manufactured in the abovedescribed manner practically no nicotine can enter the mouth of the smoker, as it is arrested by the passage of the smoke through the absorbent wad c, which, together with the thimble end 01, also prevents the tobacco from coming into contact with the lips of the smoker.
Having now particularly described and as certained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. A cigarette comprising a tubular wrapper, the filler, a thimble lying entirely within one end of said wrapper and having its end flush with the end of the cigarette and provided with smoke-apertures, and a wad of absorbent material filling said thimble, substantially as described.
2'. A cigarette comprising a tubular wrapper, the filler, a thimble formed of a single piece of impervious sheet material having a central circular portion forming the end of the thimble and projecting portions folded perpendicular to the plane of the circular portion to form the lateral wall of the thimble, said thimble lying entirely within one end of said wrapper and having its endiiush with the end of the wrapper, and a wad of absorbent material within said thimble, substantially as described.
3. Acigarette comprising the tubular wrapper, a filler, a thimble within one end of the wrapper having smoke-apertures in its end,
a layer of fabric covering said apertures and an absorbent Wad within. said thimble, sub stantially as described.
4. A cigarette comprising the tubular wrapper, a filler, a thimble lying wholly within a Wrapper which contains said thimble, subone end of the Wrapper, having its closed end stantially as described. flush with the end of the wrapper and provided with smoke-apertures, a layer of fabric 5 covering said apertures within the thimble, Witnesses:
a wad of absorbent material within said thirn- JOHN E. BOUSFIELD, bio and a mouthpiece surrounding the end of C. G. REDFERN.
ISAAC VORON.
