STEAM-INJ ECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,273, dated March 13, 19O.
Application led November 20, 1899. Serial No. 737,681. (Model.)
T all whom t may 'concern/ Be it known that I, FRANCIS STICKER, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain'new and usefnlImprovements in Steam-In j ectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and ro use the same.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in steam-injectors, and is more particularly an improvement upon the double-jet machine shown and described in Letters Patent No. 600,454, issued to me March S, 1898. By the device embraced by the patent mentioned the starting is effected by admitting steam to both sets of jets simultaneously and giving the iirst steam 2o and water a chance of free escape to the atmosphere and insuring from the first issue of steam to the jets an intimate Contact of steam and water, effecting the instant condensation of the steam in the forcer and prompt working of the device. I pointed out in that patent the advantages derived from preventing back pressure of steam of the forcer from retarding the operation of the lifter. I showed and described a wall in the discharge-cham 3o ber over which the water from the lifter would rise, completely submerging the combiningtube of the forcer and eectin g the condensation of steam therein. The initiatory steam from the lifter was permitted to escape direct 3 5 to the atmosphere, preferably through a port in the wall before mentioned, which port was choked as soon as water was lifted and discharged from the lifter. I also showed a single cock having two ports, one for the auX- iliary and supplemental overflows of the lifter and the other for the primary overliow of the forcer. In this cock was a third port through which communication was established to the boiler after the overliows were closed.
The object of the present invention is to improve the starting facilities of the injector, as well as its general construction, the details, and arrangement of parts, by preserving the original design of simplicity and compactness,
5o enabling the operation of the machine to be controlled by a single cock. It is contemplated by the present invention to provide additional and improved means for preventing back pressure in the discharge-chamber of the lifter occasioned by the escape of steam from the forcer, insuring a prompt entering into the combining-tube of the forcer of the water discharged by the lifter. It is also within the contemplation of my invention to provide the combining-tube lof the forcer with an overflow-outlet for aiding in starting the injector, which will be tightly and positively closed after the machine is in operation, avoiding the use of so-called automatic valves, which in machines subject to high ranges of pressure are totallyinadequate, for that they are normally held closed b v a vacuum and are rendered inoperative when a pressure is present beneath them` in place of the vacuum. A vacuum exists beneath'such 7o valves only during a very limited range vof pressures and of very low water. In myinjector I employ a positive device which is not affected by either vacuum or pressure and which j will keep" the several openings employed in the starting operation tightly and securely closed after the jet is once established.
The invention will be hereinafter fullyset forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of an injector constructed in accordance with the present improvement. Figs. 2 and 3 are side 85 elevations at right angles to each other of thecock. Fig. 4 representsin series crosssectional views taken through dierent points of the cock and showing the various positions thereof. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view 9o -showing the embodiment in the present device of one of the features embraced by the before-mentioned patent.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the easing or casting; a, the steam-inlet; a', 95 the steam-chamber; a2, the water-inlet; a3, the boiler-outlet, and a4 the overflow-opening.
B designates the forcer, and C the lifter. j The steam-jets I and 2 of the forcer and lifter, respectively, are made integral with the front caps 3 and 4, each of which is screwed into an opening in line with its complementary vloo series of tubes, both jets extending across the steam-chamber a and having openings for the admission of steam. By thus forming the steam-jets integral with the front caps I am enabled to quickly remove the same, and thus provide for ready inspection of the interior of the casing, as Well as for the removal ofthe series of tubes. The combining-tube 5 and delivery-tube 6 of the lifter are of ordinary construction, the latter tube opening into the discharge-chamber D. The combining-tube of the forcer is formed in two parts or sections 7 and S. The part 7 has a cylindrical enlargement 9, which fits in an opening in a Wall 10 within casing A and at its forward end is screwed into a second wall or partition 12. The section 8 of this combiningtube of the forcer forms part of the deliverytube 13, which latter is screwed into an opening constituting a port 14, through which passes what is commonly called the primary overflow, as well as the established jet of steam and Water. The cylindrical enlargement 9 of the combining-tube encircles and incloses the sectional part 8 of such tube. The bore of the forcing steam-jet being larger in area at its smallest diameterV than the smallest cross-sectional area of the deliverytube, more steam will be supplied in starting the injector than can find an outlet through this delivery-tube, and hence this surplus will spill at the inlet to the sectional portion 8 and passing into the enlargement 9 will from the latter enter a supplementary overflow passage-Way 15,which terminates in the overowopening a4. In this way back pressure inthe discharge-chamber D is entirely obviated, and in consequence a quick lift of water is effected. This being accomplished, the water rises within chamber D, encircling the combining-tube of the forcer, andJ passing over the Wall 10 and around the enlargement 9 will escape through the auxiliary overflow passage-way 1G, which opens into the over- How-opening d4. In thus causing the Water to rise Within the delivery-chamber D, as set out in my before-mentioned patent, im mediate condensation of the steam within the ,tubes of the forcer is effected, and the Water which surrounds the forcer combining-tube 'can at once enter the latter as condensation takes place.
E designates a single cock by which the ofieration of the machine is controlled. This cock, which is preferably of tapered formation, lits snugly within the bore ot' the overflow-opening d4 and is held in place by a screw-plug b. On the outer end of the stem b is an operating-handle b2, by which the cock may be turned to the right or to the left. In the shell of the cock is a longitudinal slot b3, which is designed to communicate with the primary, supplement-al, and auxiliary overflows for establishing communication between the latter and the opening a4. There are preferably two such openings b3 formed in diametrically-opposite lines in the cock,
so that the latter may be turned to the right or to the left and also to enable the boilerconnecting pipes to be drained. In my before-mentioned patent the port in the operating-cock for the primary overflow of the forcer Was in comparison with the port for the overflows of the lifter of decidedly-greater area for the purpose of enabling the overovv of the lifter to be closed in advance of that of the forcer. In my present device the operating-cock is provided with a long tapered slot communicating with the several overflows; but to insure the correct operation of the machine the overflow-passages in the casing are of greater diameter than heretofore. Passing transversely through the cock E is a port d, through which the established jet passes to the boiler when the cock is so turned as to bring such port in line of communication between the delivery-tube 13 and the boiler-outlet d3. The primary overflow for the forcer is so arranged that even during the starting operation the opening through port d to the boiler is established, this opening becoming gradually larger and giving the established jet a chance to enter the boiler instead of escaping through the overflow. It will be seen by reference to the cross-sectional views of Fig. Ll that the established jet is free to pass to the boiler before the primary overflow of the forcer is fully closed, the auxiliary and supplemental overflows being closed from the time the portal is brought into line to receive the established jet, as shown in the third series of views, Fig. 4. Another advantage resultant from the present form of cock is that the injector and the communicating-pipes to the boiler are free to drain, as there is always an opening during the iirst part of the starting and stopping.
In Fig. 5 I have indicated in the wall 10 an escape-port e, similar to the port e', shown and described in my before-mentioned patent.4 This port, the purpose of which is to permit of the escape of the initiatory steam of the lifter, may be employed `With like results and advantages as those set forth in my patent, the primary object of effecting the raising of the water within the deliverychamber so as to submerge the combiningtube and pass over the wall being attained whether or not such escape-port be present.
In operation steam is admitted to the steamchamber a' and will pass simultaneously through jets 1 and 2. The steam passing through the tubes of the lifter and into the chamber D and thence through the auxiliary overflow passage-Way 16 will escape through the overflow-opening a4 into the atmosphere, etfecting the lifting of the Water and the discharge thereof into chamber D. The steam entering through the steam-jet 1 of the forcer passes into the combining-tube thereof and thence into the delivery-tu be and out through the primary overliow to the atmosphere. The bore of the forcing steam-jet being of greater IOO IIO
sectional area at its smallest point than the cross-sectional area of the delivery-tube, any
s, excess of steam which cannot find its outlet through the latter Will spill at the mouth of the sectional portion S of the combining-tube and pass out through the enlargement 9 into thesupplementaryoverflow passage-way. In this way the escaping steam of the forcer will have no retarding influence upon the discharge from the lifter, and in consequence a prompt lifting of the Water is effected as well as immediate condensation of the steam in the tubes of the forcer. These tubes being covered by the water within chamber D, such water will iiow inthe mouth of the portion 7 of the combining-tube as the jet of steam and water is established. There being absolutely no surplus steam discharged into the chamber D, the lifter is free to act promptly and furnish the necessary water to the forcer as well'as to effect the condensation of the steam in the tubes of the latter. As soon as water is lifted cock E is turned and the auxiliaryoverow passage-way (being that of the lifter) is closed, thereby forcing the lifter to drive the water into the forcer combiningtube, there being no other outlet therefor. Then will occur an issue of steam and water through the supplemental overflow leading from the sectional combining-tube of the forcer as Well as the primary overflow from the delivery-tube thereof. By now turning the cock still farther and closing the supplemental overiow the only overiiow-outlet then left will be theV primary outlet from the delivery-tube. `T he opening to the boiler has by this time been greatly increased by the port d being brought into line between the tubes of the forcer and the boiler-outlet, and the jet being established will enter the boiler with full force. Vith a still farther slight turning of the cock all communication With the atmosphere is entirely cnt off, and the injector will then operate uninterruptedly.
