To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TRIX, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Injectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to injectors; and the object of my improvements is to provide an improved combined lift-ing and forcing in j ector and one which may be operated by the manipulation of a single stem or handle. I accomplish this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a vertical central section of an injector embodying my invention, showing by full lines the stem of the valves in the position in which the steam is entirely shut off and by dotted lines in the position for starting the lifting apparatus. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing by full lines the stem of the valves in operative position for the lifting apparatus and in position for starting the forcing apparatus and by dotted lines in opera-v tive position for both the forcing and lifting apparatuses, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section' on the line X X of Fig. l.
The same reference-letter indicates the same part in all the views.
A is the casing.
B is the inlet-port for the steam, and O that for the Water.
D is the port through which the overiiou7 is carried away, and Eis the port or passage through which the Water is forced into the boiler.
F is the nozzle, and G the tube, of the lifting apparatus.
H is the nozzle, and I the tube, of the forcing apparatus.
J is a conical aperture formed in the casing A.
K is a conical plug adapted to fit closely into the aperture J.
L is a nut Whose threads engage with the corresponding threads upon the casing A. The nut L acts to hold the plug K firmly in place in the casing. In the plug K are located the various valves and corresponding ports and the stem by which said valves are operated.
M is a valve-stem in the plug K, its axis coinciding with that of said plug. M/ are screwthreads upon the stem M, engaging with corresponding threads iu the upper portion of the plug K. The lower end of the plug K is united to the remainder thereof by screwthreads m, so that it may be detached to insert or Withdraw the valve-stem and valves.
N P and Q R S are chambers in the plug K, connecting, respectively, With the steam-port B, the lifting-nozzle F, the forcing-nozzle H, the forcing-tube I, and lifting-tube G, and with the overflow D.
T is a port connecting the chambers N and P; U, a port connecting the chambers P and Q; V, a port connecting the chambers R and S, and lV a port connecting the chamber S with a passage-Way Y, which passage-Way is open to the port E.
Z is a stuffing-box around the stem M Where it comes out of the plug K, and a is a stuffingboX around said stem between the chambers Q and R.
p is an annular disk around the stem M, and q is a gland forming in connection with the disk p the stuffing-box a.
b is a disk valve adapted to close the port T at its lower end.
d is a cylinder or piston-valve adapted to fit closely in and pass through the port U. The cylinder d is fixed upon and concentric with the stem M. e is a similar cylinder or piston-valve adapted to it closelyin the port V.
fis a valve adapted to close the port W.
g is a cylindrical chamber'n the casing A, communicating with the lifting-tube G and chamber R.
The passage-Way D', communicating with the overflow-port D, passes around the chamber fand communicates with the chamber S.
The operation of the above-described device is as follows: Oommencing with the stem M in the position shown in Fig. l, in which the port T is closed, shutting off the steam, so that no action can take place, the stem M is turned by means of the handle M2, carrying said stem downward by means of the threads M and lowering the valve b away from its seat. The parts are no7 in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. The steam is free to pass through the port T to the lifting-nozzle F; but the port U is still closed by the piston-valve d. The steam rushing IOO through the nozzle F and tube G creates a vacuum above said tube and draws the water up through the port C. The water passes through the lifting-tube Ginto the chamber g to the chamber R through the port V into the chamber S, from whence it passes through the passage D and out at the overiiow-port D. WVhen a strong solid streaml is established through the lifting-tube G, the stern M is again turned, carrying the parts down to the position shown in Fig. 2. Now the cylinder d has passed through the port U, so that steam is free to pass through said port to the forcing-nozzle H, and the cylinder e has passed into the port V, thus closing said port and shutting 0E the connection between the lifting-tube G and the overflow. The water now passes through the lifting-tube G into the chamber g to the chamber R to the upper end of the forcing-tube I, where it receives an additional impulse. It then passes through the forcing-tube I, through the passage Y and port Wto the chamber S, from whence it passes through the passage D and out through the overflow-port D. When a strong solid stream has been established through the forcing-tube I, the stem M is again turned, bringing the parts int-o the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which position the ports T and U are wide open, leaving an unobstructed passage for the steam to the lifting and forcing nozzles F and H, and the ports V and W' are closed, shutting oft' communication between the delivery ends of the lifting and combining tubes G and I. The Water will now be forced through the port or passage E to the boiler.
It will be noticed that the several operations will be accomplished by the manipulation of the stem M and that the valves are readily accessible by removing the plug K from the casing A.
Having fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- ent, is-
1. In a combined lifting and forcing injector, the case, A, the conical aperture, J, therein, the conical plug, K, in said aperture, said plug being provided with chambers, N, P, Q, communicating respectively with the steamsupply, the lifting-nozzle, and the forcingnozzle, said plug being also provided with a chamber, R, communicating with the delivery end of the lifting-tube and the receiving end of the forcing-tube, the various ports and valves and valve-operating mechanism being located in said plug, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a combined lifting and forcing injector, the case, A, the conical aperture, J, therein, the conical plug, K, in said aperture, said plug being provided with chambers, N, P, Q, communicating respectively with the steamsupply, the lifting-nozzle, and the forcingnozzle, said plug, being also provided with the chambers, R, and, S, the chamber, R, communicating with the delivery end of the lifting-tube, the receiving end of the forcingtube, and with the chamber, S, and the chamber, S, communicating with the overiiow and with the delivery end of the forcing-tube, the various ports and valves and valve-operating mechanism being located in said plug, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an injector the case, A, the conical aperture J, in said case, the conical plug, K, in said aperture, a valve-stem, M, in said plug, said plug being provided with theA various chambers substantially as described, and a stuffing-box, ct, between two of said chambers substantially as shown and described.
4. In an injector the case,A the conical aperture, J, in said case, the conical plug, K, in said aperture, a valve-stem, M, in said plug, said plug being provided with the various chambers, substantially as described, an annular disk, p, around said stem between two of said chambers, and a gland, q, forming a stuffing-box in connection with said annular disk, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a combined forcing and lifting injector, the case, A, the conical aperture, J, therein, the conical plug, K, in said aperture, said plug being provided with chambers, N, P, Q, communicating respectively with the steamsupply, the lifting-nozzle, and the forcingnozzle, said plug being also provided with a chamber,R, communicating with the delivery end of the lifting-tube, and the receiving end of the forcing-tube, the various ports and valves, and valve-stem being located in said plug, and a stuffing-box, ct, located between the chambers, Q, and, R, substantially as shown and described.
