UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CHARLES GILBERT, OF'BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MATCH- SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,830, dated September 26, 1899.
dpplioation filed November 15, 1898. serial No. 696,565. on man.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CHARLES GILBERT, of Boston, in the county of Sulfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Match-Safe, of which the followin g The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved match-safe which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to conveniently hold a quantity of matches, access to which is had by pulling the movable part of a figure carrying the lid or cover of a box in which matches are stored.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyingdrawings, form'inga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all theviews. v
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with parts broken out, and Fig. 3 is a sectional front elevation of the figure.
The improved match-safe is mounted on a bracket A, adapted to be fastened to a wall or other support, and on the said bracket is held a vertically-disposed figure B, preferably in the form of a clown, as indicated in'the drawings. From the bracket A project forwardly on opposite sides of the figure the arms 0, supporting in front of the middle portion of the figure a box D, adapted to contain matches E. The box D is normally closed by a lid or cover F, held on the arms G of the figure B, said arms being secured to a shaft H, mounted to turn in suitablebearings in the figure B, as is plainly illustrated in Fig. 3. On the shaft H is wound several times the upper end of a rope I, extending through an aperture in the figure in a downward direction to connect with the upper end of one of G, shaft H, rope I, and movable leg the legs 3 of the figure, said leg being held in position by an elastic K, attached to the bracket A, as is plainly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
Now it is evident that when the movable leg J is pulled the rope I causes the shaft H to turn, so that the arms Gr swing upward and in doing so lift the lid or cover F oif the box D, thereby giving access to the matches E, contained in said box. As soonas the operator releases the movable leg J the lid or cover F swings back to its normal position by its own Weight, thus restoring the arms normal positions.
' On the front of the box D are preferably displayed the words Please pull my leg, indicating the manner of manipulation of the match-safe in order to obtain access to the matches contained therein. 7
If found desirable, I mayin practice shorten the shaft H, so as to render only one of the arms G movable, the other arm being fixed in such position at the side of the figure B as to be out of the path of movement of the lid or cover F.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of a bracket or support, a figure mounted thereon, two movable limbs forming part of the figure,a rock-shaft mounted in the figure and carrying one of the mov able limbs, a cord wound over the rock-shaft and connected with the other movable limb, so that upon pulling the other limb the rockshaft is turned and the first-named limb is raised, a cover attached to said first-named limb, and a receptacle held by the bracket or support and located beneath the cover.
