Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 3, 1918. Serial No. 232,365.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROY E. EVENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Odor-less Garbage- Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in garbage cans, and particularly to odorless garbage cans.

One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this character wherein the offensive odors from the garbage will not escape from the can when the lid is removed to permit the introduction of garbage.

Another object is to provide a novel and improved means for receiving the garbage, as it is deposited into the receptacle, whereby the garbage will be automatically pre cipitated into the interior of the receptacle and said means prevented from movement beyond a vertical position, in either direction of its swinging or rotative movement.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the garbage can taken in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a metallic receptacle which is preferably cylindrical in shape, and having a removable cover 11, provided with a handle 12. Disposed transversely through the upper portion of the receptacle, and having its ends journaled in the sides of the receptacle, is a shaft 13,

on which is secured a circular plate 14. This plate is arranged to rotate with the shaft, while said shaft is so journaled in the sides of the receptacle that it will turn easily. Disposed vertically in the lower portion of the receptacle, and secured to the central portion of the bottom thereof, is a vertical post 15, the upper end of which is secured to the intermediate portion of the shaft 13. In the center of the plate 14 there is formed an opening to permit the upper end of the post to be secured to said shaft, but small enough to prevent any garbage which is deposited on said plate, from passing therethrough.

Garbage is deposited, preferably on one edge of the plate, so that said plate will be caused by the weight of said garbage, to be overbalanced, and swing into a vertical position, thus dumping the garbage into the lower portion of the receptacle. When said plate swings into the vertical position, it will strike against the post and thus be prevented from moving beyond such vertical position. After the garbage has slipped from the edge of the plate, said plate will swing upwardly into its normal horizontal position again.

To insure the return of the plate into its horizontal position, springs 16 and 17 are disposed around the shaft and engage their opposite end with the plate and the post.

What is claimed is:

A garbage device including a receptacle having a removable cover, a transverse shaft mounted in the upper portion of the receptacle, a tilting disk carried by the shaft and having a central opening therein, a vertical post secured centrally to the bottom of the receptacle and having its upper end secured to the said shaft within said opening, and springs carried by the shaft for yieldably holding and returning the shaft and disk to a horizontal position, said post being arranged to prevent the disk from swinging beyond a vertical position.
