WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,357, dated August 22, 1899.
Application filed March 30, 1899. Serial No. 711,123. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SARAH A. ALBERTSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Funiak Springs, in the county of Walton and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in washing-machines; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings,to which reference is had, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents an end view of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the vertically-sliding bracket, and Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of one of the clamps.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the Washing-machine, of which a a are the end uprights, which are connected to one another by the horizontal bar I), forming the frame of the machine. The end pieces a C6 are provided with openings o c, in the bottom of which is journal ed the shaft d, carrying the revolving brush 6, and which is held down in position by'the spring f, which is interposed between the block 11 on the journal 61 and the block h in the slot 0. Athumb-screwofi, passing through a female screw-threaded plate g, serves to regulate the pressure of said spring upon the journal. a vertical bar 11, upon which slide brackets 0, having-upper'and lower lugs 19 go, through which said bar passes, and near the top there of the same is provided with a short arm 1", extending at right angles to'the bracket and resting upon the journals d d, while the end s is bent upon itself, providing a lug t, having a perforation to receive the end journals of the pivoted board t, which, in connection with the pivoted board m, forms a shield, said board being pivoted at w to the top of the frame and the lower free end resting upon the upper end of the pivoted board 25, as at y.
At each end of the frame is secured lower portion of each of these brackets or .clamps is bent into a horizontal plate 0, having a slot 0 to receive the thumb-screws 0 by which the clamp is held to the bar Z) and made laterally adjustable thereon.
It will thus be observed from the above description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, that after the device is set water is placed in the washing-tub and the clamps are adjusted and secured in place thereon, the handle b is turned, and the cloth ing tobe washed is passed between the brush and rollers and fluted bar. At the sametime the shield or pivoted boards 15 and or prevent any water from splashing beyond the tub.
When it is desired to raise the shield, the
two sections or boards forming the same are simultaneously raised simply by the operator raising the shaft d, causing the short arms 0' 'to rise and carry with them the brackets, the
same sliding vertically on the rods 01., which raise the vertical board if, and the latter in ,turn raising the free end of the slanting board, causing it to turn on its pivot, or, if desired, the operator can raise the brackets without raising the shaft 01 by grasping the short arms 0 at each end of the machine and forcing them upward, thus raising the brackets and the vertical and slanting board.
In Fig. 3 the common coiled spring is shown engaging at one end the board I) and at the other end the journal of the brush, to which construction I lay no claim.
Having thus described my invention, what 'I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-' ent, is-
1. The combination with the brush-roller and fluted rollers all journztled in the frame the short arm 0', perforated lugs 19, 19,2Lnd the zmd the fixed fluted bar, of the shield oombent end .9, the end or lugs 1 having perforaprising the two sections i and m; the section tions to receive the journals of the board L, t, pivoted to the frame and the section as, pivall substantially as described.

2. The combination with the frame, brush- SARAH A. ALBERTSON.
roller, fluted rollers and fixed fluted bar; of Witnesses: the upper-and lower pivoted sections forming CHAS. M. SHUTE,
10 a shield, the sliding bracket, provided with I THEO. S. LANZ.
