SPECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,556, dated October 18, 1881,

Application filed June 21, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT H. OORNETT, of Emporia,in the county of Lyon, and in the State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in washinganachines; and it consists in certain combinations and arrangements of the parts, as more fully hereinafter specified, and

pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved machine entire. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 represents an end view of theroller-framc; Fig.4, a detached view of one of the vertical rollers. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of the roller-supporting frame.

The letter A indicates a horizontal frame supported upon uprights B, the rear ones of which extend upward above said frame, for the purposes more fully hereinafter specified.

The letter B indicates the roller-supporting frame. This frame is slotted vertically at its 0 ends, as indicated by the letter O, for the reception of the journals of the main roller,

which are held in place by means of the heads D, slotted at one side, as indicated by the letter E, the said heads being mounted on the 5 uprights F, which are surrounded by the spiral springs G.

The letter H indicates a rubber spring passing over the heads D, so as to bring a yielding pressure upon the same.

The letter Findicates the main roller, which is grooved longitudinally.

The letters L M indicate smaller rollers journaled in the ends of the frame B,the outer rollers, L, being grooved longitudinally on the periphery, and the intermediate rollers plain,

the latter being placed nearer the main roller than the first mentioned, in order to bear with more force against the clothes. The ends of the frame B are secured to the base by means of screws N, so that they can be readily detached to release the clothes if they should bind between the lower rollers and the base. The base is provided with extensible pieces P, by means of which it can be readily adjusted within tubs of different diameters.

The letter R indicates four upright rollers journaled in stationary bearin gs at the bottom, and in yielding bearings S at the top, in which the journals loosely set, being held normally by springs T in such manner as to yield to the clothes where extra widths of the same pass between them.

The supporting-frame B is secured to the arms U, which are pivoted in the upper parts of the rear standards, B, as indicated by the letter V. The rear ends of the arms are connected to the frame A at A by means of the links 0, to additionally steady the washer in the tub.

Between the heads D and the ends of the frame B are interposed washers D, mounted on the shaft of the main roller.

The letter E indicates two books, by means of which the tub F is held upon the horizontal frame.

By means ofethe extension-pieces attached to the base of the roller-frame the said frame may be secured at any desired point within the tub, while by means of the pivoted arms U and rod T the same may be retained in any desired position out of the tub.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with the roller-supporti'n g frame, the vertical rollers, loosely journaled at the top, and the springs for holding the same in a normal position and allowing them to yield to extra widths of clothes, substantially as specified.
