SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,485, dated December 19, 1899. Application filed March 31,1899. Serial No. 711,200 (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAURICE P. WORLEY, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Burners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a gas-burner so constructed that the air and gas are thoroughly mixed in a preliminary mixing chamber before the gases become heated and then introduced in a proper man ner into the heating-chamber, upon the periphery of which they are burned.
The features of my invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central vertical section of Fig. 1. Fig. eis a cross-section of Fig. 3 with the mixer omitted. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View of Fig. 1.
A represents a two-part shell, preferably of tubular or pipe form. The two parts form, respectively, a lower supplemental mixingchamber and an upper burner-chamber.
B represents the induction-orifice; O, a mixer for conducting the gas and air into the shell A.
D represents the burner-chamber, which is preferably of cylindrical form. The pipe or shell A enters the burner-shellD at each end through the bent passages Cb.

Operation: The gas is admitted through the pipe I), which taps the mixer G". e 6' represent orifices pierced through the mixer around the outside of the gas-pipe. The currents of gas and air are drawn in together through the mixer. They are caused to strike the diaphragm E, forming a top for the supplemental mixingchamber of the two-partshellA. The currents are deflected and pass off toward the ends of the supplemental mixing-chamber of the two-part shell A, entering the combustion-chamber through the incurved passages a a. The shape of this preliminary mixing-chamber is such that it causes a constant stream of the air and gas currents, which is accelerated by the bent passages to a, the result being that they are thoroughly mixed in nearly a cold state. Thus the mixed gas and air are passed around the deflector and directed upon each other from opposite directions in the heated burner-chamber,and being directed upon each other from opposite directions all around the deflector-plate with considerable velocity they form a constant whirl-pool, as it were, in which they become thoroughly-mixed and heated and pass to the burner-orifices in this condition, giving the highest possible efficiency in combustion.
I have found by experiment that this construction of burner is very economical, as well as making a perfect combustion, and equally adapted to be used with natural or artificial gas.
It will be observed that the drawings show the burner cast in one piece. This is not only a more economical manner of constructing the burner, but it prevents any leakage, which is apt to occur where sections are put together to make a complete burner.
I have shown the burner portion as constructed of an oblong cylinder shape; but of course the burner portion might be made semispherical,as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 5.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination in a gas-burner, of a gas-inlet pipe, a preliminary air-and-gas-mix ing device, connected thereto, a supplemental mixing-chamber located above said gas-inlet, having its upperedges curved inward,adeflector-plate located within said chamber between the gas-inlet and the incurved edges, a burner-chamber located above said mixing-cham-v ber and burner-orifices formed therein, substantially as specified.
2. In a gas-burner the combination of a gas-inlet pipe, an air-and-gas mixer connected thereto,a two-part sh-ell,the intermediateportion of the walls being incurved and dividing the shell into a supplemental mixing-chamher, and a burner-chamber, a deflecting-plate located in the supplemental mixing-chamber extending into the annulus formed by the inturned walls, forming incurved passages around said plate into the burner-chamber, and burnerorifices formed in said burnerchamber substantially as specified.
