SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,321, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed May 25,1899. Serial No. 718,229.

Be it known that I, FRANK M. Asumir, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city. in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to burners designed especially for burning gases rich in hydrocarbon, such as acetylene gas; and its object is to construct a burner which in practice will remain clean and free from carbon deposits and will effect perfect combustion of the gas.
In order to accomplish the desired result, I propose to induce a suitable amount of air from the surrounding atmosphere and mix the same with the gas before it reaches the flame.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure l is a vertical section of a burner constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the direction the gas assumes passing from the outlet to the flame.
Referring more particularly to the drawings,A represents a suitable standard or body of the burner, communicating with the passages (I which are preferably inclined toward each other at a suitable angle.

The bu rner-tips I.)' and D are recessed suf licient for the proper induction of air and preferably comprise cone-shaped projections, as shown in the drawings, projecting toward the open or upper end of the tube. The passages t of suitable dimension to allow the desired amount of gas to flow are formed in the burner-tips.

It will be observed that in this construction the air is drawn into the tube from the rear of the burner-ti p and mixes with the gas coming from the burner-tip at a point slightly in advance of the tip and within the tube, thus insuring that the air and gas will be well mixed at the time of ignition, that a steady strong draft of air will be created, and that the flame will be shaped within the burnertube in instances where but one burner-tip is employed.
In operation two oppositely-disposed tips are employed, as shown in the drawings, and the gas passes through the passage Ii to the projections D l) and through the burnertubes A A. In passing through the latter sufficient draft will be created to draw air in through the openings 13' B' ll B. &c., the air mixing with the gas. The two streams of gas charged with air will meet and each deflect into the stream F.
Having thus described my invention, 1 declare that what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A burner comprising a rightcylimlrical tube having an inlet'passage of contracted diameter within the end and at a distance therefrom, a tip within said tube upon which the gas is ignited after passing through the contracted passage, air-inlet openings in thesidcs of said tube, the said inlets being located in the rear of said tip and being inclined toward a point within the tube in advance of the contracted inlet-passage, and a gassnpply passage of larger diameter comnumicating with said contracted gas-inlet passage,substantially as described.
2. In a gasburner, the combination of a Y- shaped pipe having its three branches integral with each other, tubes mounted upon the upper branches of said pipe and inclined toward each other at an angle in the same plane, a tip upon which the gas is ignited within each of said tubes, gas-inlet passages of small diameter in each of said tips and communicating with said pipe, the said pipe being of relatively large diameter to the inlet-passage, and air-inlet openings in the sides of said tubes located in the rear of the respective tips and inclined toward a common center within each of said tubes in advance of the tip, substantially described.
