TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I r
Be it known thatv I, JAMES EASTERLY, ol' the'city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have nvented a new anclimproved Method of Attaching the Covers of Tea-Kettles and other Hollow Ware; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, making part of thisspecification, in which- 7 Figurel is a view of a portion of the top of a ten-kettle or other open vessel, showing the seat portion of the fastening. V I I Figure 2 .is a similar view of a portion of'the vessel with the cover attached, and shown in a positionwhich leaves the vessel open, with red lines indicating the position taken by the cover in attaching and detaching lhei'same.
Figure 3 is an inverted view of aportion ol' the cover showing the stem or pivot 51, recessfi and llange ]L.
, Figure 4: is a vertical section of the stem and fastening portion of the cover.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
It is the object of my invention to so construct the joint or hinge by which the cover is attached to the kettle or other vessel, that the cover may be freely swung around on the. plane of the top without becoming detached; that it shall have sulhcient play on the joint to admit of the annular flange on the under side entering the opening to retain the cover in its closed position; that it will not become accidentally detached; and that parts constituting the device, both on the cover and kettle, may be formed by casting, and not require the expense of mechanical labor to afterward finish er fit them. i I construct the kettle A with a seat, B, raised to the level oi the plane of the top, entering which at first in radial direction from the centre of the opening, I provide a stop, C, which turns abruptly to a direction parallel with the periphery of the opening 0, or at right angles to the direction, terminating in a circular form. At the point where the radial portion of the slot joins its lateral member, I provides. small nib or projection, d, the purpose of which will be hereafter explained. The-cover E is made with an elongated portion E, from the under side of which is cast a stem or pivot, g, shown most clearly in fig. 3; i This stern has a projection equal to the thickness of themetal of the seat 13, and terminates with a disk, it, which has a projecting flange surrounding the stem on every side. This disk consists of a washer of sheet metal afiixedby'a rivet, t, in. casting, ina manner that will be hereafter described. A small recess,f, extending radially from the axis of the ste n g to the edge of the extension-E, completes the parts of the hinge or fastening device. The coveris provided with the usual annular flange Z.' The hinge of the cover is located on the side of the tea-kettle opposite that of the spout, and at or near a line drawn through the centre of. the lugs of the hail.
The mode of attaching and operating the cover with this device is as follows: The cover is placed so that the stem gwill enter the straight part of the slot 0, where it is stopped at the bend by its edge meeting the nib d. It is then turned until the recessf coincides with the nib, when by a lateral movement, as indicated by the dotted red line in fig. 2,, the cover is pushed over the nib, which enters the recessf. This permits the stem to be brought into the bend of the slot, when areverse movement of the cover places the stem tin its proper position at the end of slot- C In this position it will swing freely over the opening of the vessel, the flange l dropping in so as to retain it; and in swinging off it will move around to a right line with the centre 'and bail, as shown in fig. Q, in which position it is stopped by the edge striking the nib ti. It is thus securely retained against accidental displacement, and is not easy of intentional removal by an inexperienced hand. The stem 9 and washer It may be constructed by cutting the letter from sheet iron of the proper size, with a central hole for the rivet 2'. The cover being moulded in the usual manner, the flask is turned-over and the follow board removed, when the disk It is applied to the stem 9 of the pattern and the rivetz' inserted in the proper place.
The other portion of the flask is now put on, and the moulding completed, the disk and rivet remaining in'thc sand, which become firmly fastened in place by the shrinking of the metal in cooling after it has been cast.
The slot C C and nib 'd are also cast with thebody of thekcttle by the ordinary method of moulding, requiring no finishing, so that the entire fastening device is formed without additional labor or cost to that of an ordinary kettle and cover. I i
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The slot 0, entering first radially from the opening of the kettle top, then turned laterally as at C combination with the stem 9 of the cover, provided with a continuously projecting ledge 01' flange, It, equivalent, arranged and operating substantially as set forth.
2. I also claim the nil) d, in combination with the recess f, on the cover, arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES EASTERLY.
