Description

tntrh gti-ttesv strnt @frn IMPBOVED WASHING MACHINE.

TO'ALL WHOM IT MAY CONQERN:
Be it known that I, S. SILLS, of Cedarville, in thev county of Stephenson, and State of Illinois, have l invented a new and useful improvement in Washing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and enact description thereof, which will enable others shilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming -part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of a wash-tub with my improved washer attached.
Figure 2 Yis 'a vertical section of the same, taken through the line x :zg-fig 1.
Figure 3 is an under side view ofthe upper rubber. l
Figure 4 is a top view of the lower rubber.

My invention has for its object to furnish a-convenient and cheap apparatus which may be readily attachedto a wash-tub, and easily removed, so that the tub can be used for'other purposes if desired; and-it consists in the lower rubber to be attached to the bottom of awash-tub, formed by securing the ends of a series of parallelslots having their uppersides or edges-rounded olf to two semicir'cular pieces in the upper rubberformed by attaching a series of parallel slats, having their upper edges or sides rounded of to a circular board, to the. edge of which is attached a rim projecting downwards so' as to be flush ornearly so`with the lower edges of the said slats, as hereinafter morefully described. e
A are the semieircular pieces, the edges of which are so formed as to t the lower partot' the tub, as shown in fig. 1. B are slats, the ends of which are securely attached to the pieces A; The slats B are placed parallel to each other, and their ends are of such a length as to coincide with the circular edges of the pieces A, as shown in lig. 4. The upper sides of the slats are rounded olf, as shown in iig- 2, so as to present a smooth surface to the clothes being washed. The lower rubber, when required for use, is secured to the bottom of the tub by screws C passing through the pieces A and screwing into the bottom of the tub, as sliown in iig. 2. D are the slats oi' the upper rubber, which are secured to the lower side of the circular board E by'screws or nails, or in any other convenient manner. The lo'wer sides or 'edges of the slats or ridges D are rounded oil', as shown in` iig. 2, so as to present a smooth surface to the clothes being washed. F are two handles, which are attached to the upper side of the boardA F, one on each' side, as shown in'lig.1. G is a rim, attached tothe edge of the circular board E and projecting downward to or nearly to the lower edges of the slats or ridges D, to prevent thc water'from spattering while the machine is being used. H are small blocks, attached to the under side ofi Y the circular board E to support the rim G where it is unsupported by the ends of theslats D, as shown in g. 3.
I is a corrugated plate or ordinary rubbing-board, attached to the central part of the upper side of the circular board E, and secured in place by the cleats'J, as shown in iig. 1. In using the machine the lower 'rubber is placed upon the bottom'of awash-tub and `secured in place by the screws C. The water and clothes' arethen put in und the upper rubber placed upon them and operated byvmeans of the handles F by turning it to the right and-left with axocking movement. i l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-is
The corrugated board I in combination with the upper rubbingsboard E, having the slats D, rim G, handlesv F,Athe lower rubbing-board, consisting oi the semicircular boards A and slats B, substantially as herein set forth for the` nurpose specified.
