UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEHU C. MOORE, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPHUS C. CHAMBERS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAIL-LIDS OR BARREL-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,634., dated July 15, 1879; application filed March 10, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEHU C. MOORE, of Jacksonville, Duval county, Florida, have invented a new and useful Pail-Lid or Barrel- Cover, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a folding and detachable cover for barrels, buckets, and other like wooden vessels.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, representing the cover in place upon a tobacco-pail, and having its folding leaf in the open condition. Fig. 2 is an under-side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a representation. to a larger scale, of one of the engaging or fastening spurs detached.
A may represent a tobacco-pail or any other like article of cooper-age. B and C represent two wooden slabs, of which B corresponds to the smaller, and C to the larger, of two circular These slabs are secured to one another by hinges D, so that after the slab B has been made fast in the opening of the vessel the slab C or lid proper may be raised, as indicated in Fig. 1, or may be allowed to close down upon that part of the opening not covered by slab B.
The slab B is made capable of attachment to the vessel by the following means: E E are two similar spurs, of which each has a pointed heel, e, and an orifice, e. A woodscrew, F, being driven through said orifices into the under surface of the slab B, co-operates with the said heels in securin g said spurs to their represented positions on the slab. G g is a bent lever that is pivoted to the slab by means of wood-screw H. To the short arm g of this lever is pivoted a dog, I, having aslot, 'i, for the reception of a wood-screw, J. The long arm G of the lever has a lip, g, which, entering a ratchet, K, that is screwed fast to the slab, retains the lever G g and the dog I to their looking or effective position. There is sufificient elasticity in the long arm G to prevent accidental dislodgment of its lip from the rack, coupled with sufficient pliability to permit the easy disengagement of the lever by any one desiring to detach the cover.
I claim as new and of my invention The pail-lid or barrel-cover consisting of the two segmental slabs B C, hinged to one another, one slab being provided with spurs E E, bent lever G g g, slotted dog I, screw J, and ratchet K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JEHU C. MOORE.
