Be it known that I, EWING MOOLEARY WICKERSHAM, of Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and Territory of Arizona, have invented a new and Improved Fastening Device for Neckwear, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a shield for made-up ties-such as scarfs, bows, and the likewhich shield is provided with a means for fastening the made-up tie to a collar-button.

Another object of the invention is to provide a shield having a fastening device which may be employed in connection with a new tie, scarf, or how after having been detached from the made-up tie to which it was originally secured.

A further object of the invention is to provide a fastening device capable of being expeditiously and conveniently manipulated and which will securely hold the shield in engagement with a collar-button, the shield and fastening device therefor being exceedingly simple,durable,economic, and lightin weight.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved shield and fastening device applied to a collar and collar-button, the collar-button being in section. Fig. 2 is avertical section taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the shield and fastening device, the section being taken below the opening in the shield adaptedto receive the collar-button; and Fig. at is a front elevation of the improved shield, illustrating the application thereto of a fastening device of slightly-different construction than that shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.

to a made-up tie in any suitable or approved manner; The shield is made, preferably, of metal, although celluloid, stiff pasteboard, or equivalent material may be employed. At the central portion of the shield an opening 10 is made, of sufficient size to admit of the passage of the head of the collar-button C.

The material of the shield below the opening 10 is struck outward to form two flaps or guides 11 and 12, the said guides or flaps being opposite one another and in horizontal alinement. Each flap extends outward at a right angle from the shield and then parallel therewith, forming a slideway in which a latch 13 is adapted to have guided vertical movement. The latch 13 is preferably of metal or of a similar material to that of the shield and is provided at its upper end with a bifurcated head 14, adapted to receive between its members the shank of a collar-button C, and the said latch is further provided at its lower end with a handle-section 15, by means of which it is manipulated. The handle-section will extend but slightly below the shield when the head of the latch engages with the collar-button.

In operation when the tie having the improved shield is to be placed upon a collar the latch 13 is drawn downward to expose the entire opening 10 in the shield, and after the collar-button has been passed through the opening 10 it is simply necessary to carry the latch or slide upward, so that the shank of the collar-button will be received between the members of the head of the latch or slide, the head of the latch or slide being back of the head of the collar-button as shown in Fig. 2.

In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a slight modification in the form of the latch. The latch 16 (shown in Fig. 4) is substantially of a T shape, being pivoted by a pin 17 at or near the extremity of its shank member to the shield, and one member of the head portion of the latch extends in direction of the opening 10, while the other member extends beyond the lower edge of the shield and is bent upon itself or enlarged to form a handle-section 19. Where the upper member of the head connects with the shank of the T-latch, an angular recess 18 is made, and when the latch is moved upwardly this angular recess is adapted to coincide with the opening 10 in the shield, and the wall of the angular recess when the latch is in its upper position is arranged to engage with the shank of the collar-button O.

This device is exceedingly simple, it is durable and economic, as stated, and it enables a made-up tie to be quickly placed in position. The shield and its fastening device when made of metal or a like material may be removed from a soiled and discarded tie and readily attached to another.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fastening device for neckties, having a shield with an orifice to receive the collarbutton, a latch mounted on the shield below said orifice and having a recess in its upper edge, the latch moving vertically to engage the under side of the neck of the collar-button, and the latch having a handle-section extended downward below the shield to permit of the manipulation of the latch.

2. A necktie-fastener, having a shield provided with an orifice for the reception of the collar-button, guides formed on the shield and located opposite to each other below said orifice, and a latch mounted to slide Vertically in the guides below the collar-button and having a bifurcated head, the head being adapted to engage against the under side of the neck of the collar-button to hold the same in place, the lower end of the latch being extended below the shield to form a handle-section permitting the manipulation of the latch.
