JAMES HULET-T, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOUR-IN-HAND-TIE FORMER AND HOLDER.
Specification of LetMs Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1911.
Application filed August 30, 1910. Serial No. 579,759.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, J AMES HULETT, a
. citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fourin-Hand-Tie Formers and Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to four-in-hand tie formers and holders, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is designed for use in connection with turneddown collars, and with which a four-in-hand tie may be quickly and easily connected and formed into a knot, and which may also be quickly and easily connected with the collar button of a turned down collar in the manner of other devices of this class.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which the parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved four-in-hand tie former and holder. Fig. 2 a back view and showing the first step in the process of connecting a tie with the former and holder. Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing another step in the process of connectin the tie with the former and holder; and, Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the tie knot completely formed on the former and holder.
My improved fourin-hand tie former and holder is shown at a in Fig. 1 and is made of celluloid, rubber, or any other suitable flexible material, and if desired, it may be out 'or formed from a thin sheet of flexible metal. The device consists of a horizontal top portion a and a central depending portion a in the bottom or lower end of which is a circular opening a through which, in connecting the device with a collar, the front collar button is passed, and the part a is also provided with a vertically arranged slot a which communicates with the opening a. The horizontal top part a of the device forms oppositely directed wings a and when the tie is connected with or knotted on the holder and former as shown at Fig. 4:, and said device is connected with the collar as hereinbefore described, the wings a. fit under the opposite ends of the turned-down part of the collar in the same manner as with other devices of this class, and the said device being composed of flexible material the said wings may be curved, as will be understood so as to conform to the curve of the neck and to the curve of the collar.
In connecting a tie b with the former an holder, one end portion of the tie, the shorter end portion thereof, is passed down over the former and holder as shown at b in Fig. 2, while the longer end portion 6 of the tie hangsdown at the back of the former and holder. The longer end portion I) of the tie is then passed forwardly around the depending portion a of the former and holder and around the part b of the tie, as indicated in Fig. 3, and to form the front loop 6 shown in F1 4, after which the longer end ortion b 0% the tie is passed upwardly as s own in Fig. 2, and down through the loop I) as shown in Fig. 4, and this completes the connection of the tie with the former and holder and forms a complete knotas shown in said figure.
In connecting the device with the collar, said device is held with the transverse head portion a thereof turned to one side of the neck, the collar button is passed through the opening a. and the device is moved or manipulated so that the shank of the button will enter the slot a after which the device is turned into a vertical position and the wings a are passed beneath the end portions of the turned-down part of the collar in the same manner as with other devices of this class.
When my improved tie former and holder is connected with a collar in the manner described, no parts of the device can be seen, as the wings a thereof are entirely covered by the end portion of the turneddown parts of the collar, and the central depending part a of the device is entirely covered by the folds b and b of the tie and the end portion 6 thereof.
By means of the slot a. the former and holder may be adjusted vertically when in position on the collar, and the device is thus adapted for use in connection with collars of different heights, and it will be understood that the length of the part a and the length of the slota may also be regulated in the manufacture of the device so as to adaptthe former and holder to collars of different heights. It will also be seen that the top edge of the horizontal head portion a of the device is concave as shown at M, and this form of construction is preferred in order that the device may be'nilnie to more snugly fit the curve of the collar when in use.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A four-in-hand tie former and holder de vice formed from a flat sheet of flexible material and consisting of a horizontal top portion and a central depending portion lying in the plane of the top portion the thereof withan aperture throughwhich the 20 head of a collar button is adapted to be passed and above which is a vertically arranged slot which communicates therewith.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing s as my invention I have signed 'my name in 25 presence of the subscribing witnesses this 29th day of August 1910.
JAMES HULETT.
