UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MONTE HALE AND CHARLES TUDOR, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
COLLAR OR CUFF FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,850, dated October 31, 1899. Application filed May l, 1899. Serial No. 715,212. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that We, MONTE HALE and CHARLES TUDOR,citizens of the United States, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar or Cuff Fasteners 5 and We dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastening devices for articles of clothing, such as collars and cuffs; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of a collar-fastener drawn to an enlarged size. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line :c m in Fig. 2. Fig. 4E is a detail view of the blank from which the main portion of the fastener is formed. Fig. 5 is a side View of a cuff-fastener. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the levers.
A is the shank of the main portion of the fastener. Theend portions B and C of the shank A are bent over in opposite directions and are arranged substantially parallel with the shank. The part B is provided with a spring-tongue b and the part C is provided with a spring-tongue c. These tongues are punched or cut out of the material of the main portion of the fastener and their free ends project in opposite directions.
D are two similar levers, each provided With fulcrum-pivots d and a heel d', which projects at an angle to the main part of the lever. The pivots d are arranged at the j unction of the heel with the lever and engage with depressions or recesses e, pressed into the inside surfaces of the springy parts B and C near the free ends of the spring-tongues and one on each side thereof.
The opposed portions of the fastener are preferably rou ghened, and the collar, cuff, or
portion of the shirt is slipped between them when the levers are in the position shown in Fig. 3. The levers are then turned to the positions shown in Fig. 1, so that the article is clipped and held in the desired position.
This device can be used to fasten other ar'- ticles of clothing besides collars and cuffs, such as underclothing.
What we claim isl. In a fastener, the combination, with a spring-shank having its end portions bent over in opposite directions and provided with integrally-formed spring=tongues, of levers pivot-ally connected with the said end porL tions and provided with heels which press the spring-tongues toward the shank, substan= tially as set forth.
2. In a fastener, the combination, with a spring-shank provided with tongues formed integral with it and extending in lopposite die rections from its middle part and at the middle, of its Width, the end portions of the said shank being bent over in opposite directions; of levers pivotally connected to the springy end portions of the shank and provided with 'heels which press the spring-tongues toward the main portion of the shank, substantially as set forth.
3. In a fastener, the combination, with a spring-shank having one of its end portions bent over and provided with a spring-tongue formed integral with the shank, of a lever pivotally connected with the said end portion and provided with a heel which presses the i spring-tongue toward the shank, and a fastening device at the opposite end of the said shank, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
MONTE HALE. CHARLES TUDOR.
