. Be itknown th at LHERBERT Prnnor SMITH a citizen of the United States, residing at Lime Springs, in the county of Howard and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Broom- Moistener, ofwhich the following is a specification.

This invention relates to broom-moisteners of that class employing a reservoir carried upon the broom-head; and it has-for its object to provide certain improvements in the manner of attaching the reservoir to the broom.

To this end the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a broom-head having the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof. Fig. 4: is a detail reverse perspective view of the device.

Like numerals of reference denote like and corresponding parts in each of the several figures of the drawings.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, particularly to Fig. 4 thereof, the device consists of a reservoir or receptacle 1 in the form of a flat metallic box preferably tapered upward to conform to the shape of, a broomhead. A filling-opening is provided in the box and closed bya screw-cap 2. This opero ing is shown as formed through thebottom of the box, but may be disposed at any preferred part thereof. Extending transversely across the rear face of the box, near the lower end thereof, is a series of perforations 3, forming a distributor through which the water or other liquid contents of the reservoir is adapted to be conveyed to the broom-head.

The reservoir is attached to the broom by means of a pair of duplicate spring clampingjaws 4:. Each jaw is formed-from a single length of spring-wire bent intermediate of its ends into a looped tongue 5, the sides of which are gradually curved, as at 6, at. approximately rightangles to the plane of the tongue, and the opposite free extremitiesof the Wire 6.1399. .serinno. 704,692. ' edges of the box 1, and the hooks 7 of the respect-ive' clamping-jaws are engaged therewith, so as to mount the jaws upon the box and extending outward upon the reverse or perforated side thereof. By reason of the h'ook-and-eye connection the jaws may be removed when desired. It will be noted that the hooks 7 of the spring-jaws are bent toward the tongues thereof, and the hooks are engaged with the eyes 8 from the side opposite the tongues, whereby the outer ends of the respective curved portions 6 engage across the eyes and prevent accidental disengagev ment of the hooks when the device is mounted upon a broom.

In the application of the device, the reservoir being filled with water, the perforated reverse side of the box is placed against one of the flat sides of tllG'blOOlll-llfitd and the clamping-jaws are engaged about the opposite edges thereof, as shown in Figsxl, 2, and- 3. The curved portion 6 of the jaws will fit the edges of the broom-head, and the tongues 5 will engage the broom-head on the side opposite the reservoir, andthus the latter is mounted upon the broom.

To prevent the device from slipping down and 0E from the broom and maintain it in its proper place, a removable pin 9 is passed through an eye 10, provided upon the top of the box, and transversely into the broomhead. The reservoir being thus mounted upon the broom the water will percolate out through the perforations 3 onto the broomhead, thereby keeping the latter damp or moist to prevent the raisi n g of dust and avoid the use of damp sawdust or water being first sprinkled upon the floor. The spring clamping-jaws removably connect the reservoir to the broom, so that the device may be removed and applied to another broom, and by reason of the spring of the jaws the device will fit any size of broom-head. The clamping action of the jaws binds the broom-head together, preventing it from spreading out, and thereby addsto the life thereof.

the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the ad vantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim--is 1. A broom-moistening device, comprising a Hat reservoir having a filling-opening and provided with a series of perforations on its inner side contiguous to the broom, and duplicate spring clamping-jaws provided at opposite sides of the reservoir and adapted to embrace the edges and opposite side of a broom-head, whereby the reservoir may be mounted thereon at one side and at any point along the broom-head, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a broom-moistening device, the combination with a reservoir having a fillingopening, means for distributing the liquid contents of the reservoir, and eyes provided at opposite sides of the reservoir, of spring clamping-jaws, each jaw being formed from a single length of spring-wire bent intermediate its ends into a looped tongue, the opposite ends being curved in planes at right angles to that of the tongue, and the free eX- tremities formed into attaching-hooks, the latter being removably engaged with the respective eyes, and the tongues adapted to embrace a broom-head, whereby the device may be removably mounted upon the broom, substantially asshown and described.

In a broom-moistening device, the combination with a reservoir having means to mount the same upon a broom-head, and an eye provided upon one edge thereof, of a removable pin adapted to be passed through the eye and laterally into the broom-head, Whereby the reservoir is prevented from being accidentally displaced from the broom, substantiall y as described.

4. In a broom-moistening device, the combination with a reservoir having means to distribute the liquid contents thereof, and eyes provided upon opposite edges thereof, of spring jaws whereby the device may be mounted upon a broom, each jaw having a hook at one end engaged with the respective eyes, substantially as and for the purpose set ,forth.
