T 0 @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, W ILLIAM Snvnnns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops; and

I do hereby declare that the following is a' full, clear, and enact description of the saine, reference being hadnto the. accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in' mops, especially those mops adapted for thepolisliing of floors and the like, and has for one of its objects the provision of suoli a mopl having a head from which the mop inaterial proper may be removed whenever desired.

In the use of such polishing and dusting mops it has been fo-und that the mop material'of yarn, cords or libre will wear out much more quickly than the frame or metal plates composing the head of the mop and the handle fastened thereto, and it has been a much desired object to provide a mop of thisso i ywherein the mop material may be readily replaced when the saine has become worn through use.v

It is therefore an important obj ect of this invention to provide a mop or the likewherein the mop material or fabricated cord is readily removable for cleansing and re-L placeable with a minimum of labor and expenditure of time.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a mop having a removable body portion which can be conveniently and readily mounted in operative position and which can be so mounted that it will be positively secured upon the frame or head with no liability of becoming loose or Jfalling off in use, no matter how severe.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a mop head so shaped that a removable mop body will automaticallyconform or adapt itself to the head when attached thereto.

Still another important object of this invention is the provi-sion of a mopbody provided for attachment to a mop head or frame provided with means whereby it can be readily' attached and mop holding frame.

It is an important object of this invention to provide an adjustable fastening element detached from a v upon a mop head whereby amop body may be attached thereto and its relation thereto f adjusted to accommodate the preference of the user thereof and also to make allowances for any variations suoli as stretching lwhich may occur in a mop body which has been used for some time.

This application is a' continuance of my copending application SerialNo. 451,008 for iii-op, led March 9, 1921.

Figure 6 is a similar view showing a slight i band or 'binding tape 14 at the top thereof.

The plate 10 is approximately triangular in form, as -shoiwn,rbut is pi'ovided with `rounded corners 16 and" the sides thereof are made in the form of obtuse vangles which have their apices 18 at about the middlepoint and the same extending outwardly,`as best'shown in Figures 1, l5, 6 and 7 of the drawings. This particular shape constitutes one of the most important features of the invention,

and was designed for the purpose ol providmg a better and closer lit between the sides of the frame and the mop head when .drawn into position. thereon. One side of the frame 1s cut away in the form of a semi-circular arc-shaped recess, as shown at 20, to provide for the insertion of fastening or attaching means for the ends `ot the tape or band 14 of the mop head 12.

This `fastening or attaching device preierablyconsists of a suitable bolt or bar 22' 'having threads on one end thereof for cooperation with a wing nut 24, as best shown in Figure 2. The other end oit this bolt 22 vis attachedA by means of spot welding, soldering, or the like, to a U-shaped plate 26,

which extends upwardly through slots 28 in the plate 10 and is adapted for the pivotal attachment of the-socket member 30 for the mop rhandle thereon. The socket member 30 is provided with Lthreads 31 for the ready insertion of the mop handle and its lower end is 'formed 1n 'the shape 'of a y U, as shown at 32 in Figure 4, which U fits inside the U-shaped clamp 26 projecting` upwardly through the slots 2S in the base 10 and is held in pivotedrelation theretoV by means of a bolt 34 having a nut35 thereon, which bolt passes through a series of aligned holes or openings in the U-shaped v members 26 and 32 respectively. rlhe sides of the U-shaped lbolt or clamp are each punched out slightly above the plate 10, as

rIhe plate 10 is provided on all of its vthree sides with downwardly extending inwardly curved flanges 50, as shown in Figures 3 and 5, which preferably are sepa-V ratedat vthe points 18 and at--the rounded` corners 16 and also at the recess 20. These inwardly curved downwardlyextending c flanges l50 are provided for aclose lit and gripping coacton` with the-*tape or band 14 of the mop member 12, as bestshow'n in Figure 2. A modification of this arrangement is shown in Figures 6 and 9 wherein additional holding members are provided in the shape of punched out extensions 60 ot the plate-10 which project in the same plane 1 as the top of said plate `and are adaptedfor lthe purpose of holding the mop'head; 14

this modification the flanges 56 are shown as continuous around the sides ot the plate 10, which form of course may be varied il' desired, and these `flanges are shaped in the form of a straight downward extension, as shown in Figure 9, having an outwardly extending lower portion or edge thereof 57 parallel to the plate 10. 1l desired, the extension 57 instead of being made in a continuous straight line at the lower outer edge thereof may be scalloped, as shown at 59 in Figure which provides an additional gripping means for the mop binder 14.

lhe binder or tape '14 is provided with integral extensions 62, as shown in Figure 8, formed ot the same material as the band but not enclosing or gripping any yarn or fibre 12. These extensions 62 are provided with metallic eyelets 64, as shown, for yproper co-cperation with the rod or the bolt 42 according to the particular construction of the head or frame upon which the mop body is tobe attached. The length of the rod 22 or the bolt 42 is so adjusted that neither` will extend kbeyond a line drawn from one edge of the semi-circular recess 2O to the opposite edge so that there will be no possibility of either the bolt 22, winged nut- 24 orL bolt head 44sinterfering with or scratching the furniture, floor or other objects upon which the mop vis to be used. It will be seen thatwthe boltV 42l having the head-44 thereon is ot such a length that when the mop binder 14 is drawn down into position upon the plate` 10 and into close conjunction with the vflanges 50 or 5G, the nut-or lhead 44 will be well within the recess 20 so as to not interfere Vwith the operation of the mop Aor, scratch or mar the V'furniture orl wall ofthe room.

The'operationf is :as follows lWhe-never 1t 1s desired-to place a new mop `body upon the trame or plate 10` to replace one which has been worn ont, the winged nut 24 ort-he bolt 44 is detached from the trame and the mop `body fitted thereto and the eyelets' G4 placed in lproper position, after which the bolt Vor nut is tightened to retain the mop in position onthe frame, and

it will be evident that the tension of the same can be adjusted by merely regulating the extent to which the tightening or holding bolt or nut is applied to the Yframe 10. rlhe flangemembers 50 operate and coact with the mop binder 14 to hold the same securely inposition and any outward bulge due to the stiiness or bulkiness of the mop body and its consequent ill-fitting around the corners-160i Athetriangular trame is compensa-ted byy the'angles 18 in the sides, as shown in Figure 1*, therebyfaliording a very closeflitandiproper holding-grip between all portions of the mopbodyand the sides ot the frame 10. This is equally well effected bythe modification shown in FiglBO ures G and 7 wherein the mop binder or bead 14 is held securely in position by means of the ears or lugs and the lower outwardly extending edges of the flanges 57 or 59. These members act to hold the mop body from either upward or downward displacement without any possibility of the same becoming loose or dropping 0E through use. l

I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

I claim as my invention:

l. A mop including in combination a plate comprising a holding frame adapted to receive a mop body, a removable mop body attached to said frame, an upwardly extending lug inserted through the frame for attaching a handle socket, and mop body attaching means secured to the bottom portion of said lug.

2. The combination with a mop bodyhaving a bead formed on its upper edge, said bead being provided with openings adjacent its ends, of a mop head comprising a body portion, flanges arranged on said body portion and extending around the periphery thereof, one side of said body portion being provided with a recess, said flanges being cut away adjacent said recess, said body portion being provided with a pair of spaced slots, a member secured to the underside of said mop head, said member being provided with a pair of arms extending through said slots, a socket for the reception of a handle secured to said arms, and a threaded rod secured to said member on the underside of the mop head, said threaded rod projecting beyond the edge of the mop head adjacent said recess.

The combination with a mop body having a bead formed on its upper edge, said bead being provided with openings adjacent its ends, of a mop head comprising a body portion, flanges arranged on said body portion and extending around the periphery thereof, one side of said body portion being provided with a recess, said flanges being cut away adjacent said recess, the body portion of said mop head being provided with a pair of spaced slots, a substantially U-shaped member secured to the underside of the body portion of the mop head, the arms of said kU-shaped member extending through said a fastening element secured tothe base of j said U-shaped member, said fastening element being `threaded and projecting outwardly beyond the body portion adjacent said recess, the end of said threaded member being adapted to pass through the openings in the bead of the mop, yand lugs for retaining the mop in position.

4l'. A mop head formed of a single piece of sheet metal, said mop head comprising a body portion and a flange for the reception of the bead of a mop, said flange being arranged at right angles to the body portion of the mop head, a second flange formed on the lower edge of said first flange and arranged substantially parallel to the body portion of the mop head to prevent downward displacement of the mop, and a plurality of spaced ears formed on the upper edge of said first named flange to prevent upward displacement of the mop.

5. A mop holder including in combination a slotted plate comprising a mop holding frame, a clampl` inserted through the slots in said plate, and punched out portions in the sides of said clamp adapted to hold same firmly in position in the slots.

6. A mop holder including in combination a slotted plate comprising a mop holding frame, a clamp inserted through the slots in said plate, punched out portions in the sides of said clamp adapted to hold same firmly in position in the slots, and means attached to said clamp to adjustably hold a mop in position on said mop holder.

7. A mop holder comprising a slotted plate in the form of a triangle with the sides in the form of obtuse angles and with rounded corners, downwardly bent concave integral anges on the sides ofthe plate, said plate having a recess in one side thereof, a v

clamp inserted through the slots in said plate adapted to hold a handle socket, and means secured to said clamp and extending outwardly beneath said recess and adapted to tighten a mop around said flanges.
