Description

Patented Mar. 7, I899.
J. G. KERNEK. WBENGH FOB TIRE BOLTS.
(Application filed July 12, 1898.)
(No Model.)
NITED STATES 1 PATENT FFlCt WRENCH FOR TIRE-BOLTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,657, dated March 7, 1899.
Application filed July 12,1898.
T aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ULIUs G. KERNEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of Oalifornia, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in lVrenches for Tire-B olts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of wrenches which are used for setting the nuts on bolts which fasten the tires in position on the fellies of vehicle-wheels and analogous articles, my object being to furnish a wrench which may be cheaply and durably constructed, easily and expeditiously manipulated, and which may be effective in its operation.
It consists in the peculiar construction, novel combination, and adaptation of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench, showing the same in position for 0peration. Fig. 2 is a front end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same with the handles and crank broken away. Fig. 4 is a side view of the guide-clamp. Fig. 5 is a top view of the reducer, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the same.
Similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
1 represents the handles, 2 the upper jaw, and 3 the lower jaw, of my wrench, said jaws and handles being pivoted together by a rivet 1. The lower jaw 3 has a head 5, rigidly attached to the same. The said head 5 has two openings vertically therein, into which two shafts 6 and 7 are journaled. The shaft 6 extends a suitable distance above the jaw 2 and has a crank 8 attached to its upper end, said crank 8 having a suitable handle 9 attached to its free end. To the lower end of the shaft 6, immediately below the head 5, a pinion 10 is rigidly attached, said pinion 10 Serial No. 685,754. (No model.)
being adapted to engage with a cog-wheel 11,
rigidly attached to the shaft 7, which is hollow for the purpose, as will be shown. A square head 12, adapted to fit over a nut 22, is rigidly attached to the top end of the hollow shaft 7, which is immediately above the head 5. I provide a reducer 13, (shown in Figs. 5 and 6,) which may be inserted in the head 12 and maintained therein by means of a screw 14, which is inserted in the side of the head 12. By means of the reducer 13 a smaller nut may be operated upon. employment of a plurality of said reducers constructed with the openings therein of different sizes any sized nut may be engaged.
To the rear of the shaft 7, at an angle with the handles 1, a guide-clamp 15 is adjustably inserted in the top side of the head 5, said clamp 15 having two laterally-extending arms 16, slightly curved upwardly, which are adapted to engage with the under side of the rim or felly 17 of a vehicle-wheel. A jam-nut 18 is inserted on the clamp 15 and adapted to engage with the face of the head 5. The jaw 2 is curved laterally until the end is located immediately above the head 12. A thumbscrew 19 is adj ustably inserted vertically in the end of said jaw 2, the lower end of which thumb-screw 19 is adapted to engage with the head of the bolt 20.
A spring 21 is rigidly attached to the lower handle 1 and adapted to engage with the upper handle 1, thereby tending to maintain the handles apart.
The mode of operating my improved wrench for tire-bolts is as follows: After the bolt has been driven in the felly 17 and the nut 22 started thereon the operator adjusts the guide-clamp 15 16, so that the same engages with the felly 17 before the head 12 touches the same. The head 12 or reducer 13 (if a smallnut is used) is then inserted over the nut 22, with the guide-clamp 15 16 against the under side of the felly 17, so as to let the head 12 revolve free of the said folly, and the thumbscrew 19 is adjusted in the upper jaw 2 and placed in position on the head of the bolt 20, whereupon the operator grasps the handles 1 in his left hand and impinges the thumbscrew 19 against the head of the bolt 20, which is held rigidly by reason of the clamp 15 16. With his right hand the operator grasps the By the i eration, the handles 1 are at an angle with and above the tire and felly for the purpose of obviating the liability of injuring the operators hand on the edge of the tire. The thumb-screw 19 may be adjusted to fit the thickness of the felly. By having the bolt 7 hollow the end of the bolt 20, if it extends through the nut 22, may protrude without interruption. V
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a tire-bolt wrench, the combination of handles pivotally connected together and terminating in jaws, the head arranged at the end of the lower jaw, a nut-engaging shaft journaled in the head, a crank-shaft also journaled in the head and connected by intermeshed gears with the nut-engaging shaft, an adjustable screw mounted in the upper jaw and arranged to impinge on the head of a tire-bolt, and the guide-clamp connected to the head on the lower jaw and having the lateral arms 16 arranged to engage the inner side of a felly and 'therebyhold the wrench against lateral deflection, substantially as specified.
2. In a wrench of the class described, the 5 combination with the handles 1 provided with the spring 21 and pivoted together by the rivet 4:, of the diverging jaw 2 attached to one of said handles 1, and provided with the adjustable thumb-screw 19, the lower jaw 3 attached 4o t the other handle 1 and having the head 5 rigidly attached to the end thereof, the shaft 6 journaled vertically in one side of the head 5, the crank 8 9 attached to the upper end and the pinion 10 attached to the lower end of the said shaft 6, the gear-wheel 11 attached to the lower end of a shaft 7, and adapted to engage with the pinion 10, the said shaft '7 journaled in the side of the head 5, the head 12 rigidly attached to the top end of the shaft 7, the reducer 13 removably inserted in the head 12, and suitable means for holding the same in position, and the guide-clamp 15 16 inserted in the rear side of the head 5 and provided with the jam-nut 18, all arranged and operating substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of-two witnesses.
JULIUS G. KERNEK.
