G. 757) This invention relates to a tool or screw driver for removing and for inserting screws relative to objects in general and in particular for removing screws from a conventional type of governor.
This invention is particularly useful for removing screws when they have been so tightly inserted as to preclude the use of a conventional screw driver.
An object of this invention is to provide a device for removing screws.
' Another object is to provide a device for removing rmly lodged screws, which device is simple to operate, is simple in construction, and is ecient in use.
Further objects and advantages of this invention, as well as its construction, arrangement and operation, will be apparent from the following description and claims in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a top plan view of the screw driver with a unit of work seated thereon.

Support I2 has a bore I3 in which is situated a piston-like rod I4. A screw I6 is inserted into rod It through an elongated hole I5.
A spring Il encases the minor diameter portion 33, of rod I4 in bore I3 and said spring Il is held in place by a disc I8 located in a recess 3l on the upper surface of support I2 and flxedlyv secured to support I 2.
A rectangular arm I9 is ksecured to rod I4 by a screw 2U and has at its extremity a bore 2| to receive a screw 22. Screw 22 has a hexagonal type socket in its head toreceive a lever arm 23. Screw 22 has a reduced portion 24 and a blade 25 extending downward therefrom.
A securing bolt 26 has a slotted head 21 to secure a unit 28 to base II Screws 29 in unit 28, which are the screws to be removed or inserted, have slots 30. The securing bolt 26 is engaged with a threaded hole 32 in plate I I.
In its operation the screw driver I can be used for inserting or removing screws 29 from unit 28. This is accomplished by securing the work 28 to plate II bybolt 26. Arm I9 is raised against the action of spring I1 and lever handle 23, engaged in screw 22, is turned until blade 25 is positioned directly over and in alignment with slot 39 of screw 29. 'Ihe insertion of blade 25 is brought about by releasing arm I9 so that the action of spring Il forces rod I4 and blade 25 inl a downward direction. The distance of travel of rod I4 and blade 25 is governed by screw I6 riding vertically in elongated hole I5.
By turning lever 23, screw 29, engaged with blade 25 in slot 3E, may either be tightened or removed. Screws 22 and 29 preferably have the same number of threads per inch.
It is understood that various modications and changes can be made in this invention without Vdeparting from the spirit and scope thereof as set forth in the appended claims.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor,
What is claimed is: y
1. A tool comprising a base, means on said base for accommodating a workpiece having an element that can be screwed, an arm mounted on said base for translational movement toward and away from said base and having an element in spaced relation to said base and extending adjacent the workpiece, means for yieldingly urging said arm toward said base, a screw threaded through said arm element toward the workpiece, and means on said screw for engaging the workpiece element, whereby turning of said screw eifects screwing of the workpiece element.
2. A tool comprising a base, means for detachably securing in fixed relation on said base a workpiece having an element that can be screwed, a support mounted in substantially normal relation on said base, an arm on said support disposed in spaced, substantially parallel relation to said .base and having an element extending adjacent the workpiece, said arm being mounted for translational movement toward and away from said base, and a spring for yieldingly urging said arm toward said base, a screw threaded through said arm element toward theworkpiece, and means on said screw for eng-aging the workpiece element, whereby turning of said screw effects screwing of the workpiece element.
3. A tool for turning screws in a workpiece,
said tool comprising a base, means for detachably securing in xed relation on said base a workpiece havingv an element that can be screwed, a support mounted in substantially normal relation on said base, said support having a longitudinal central bore and a lateral slot from the bore to the exterior of said support, a rod mounted for reciprocation in the bore, a projection from said rod extending into the slot for limiting the reciprocation of said rod, a spring in the bore for yielding-1y urging the rod toward said base, an arm on said rod disposed in spaced, substantially parallel relation to said base and having an element extending adjacent the workpiece, whereby reciprocation of said rod causes translation of said arm, a screw threaded through said arm element toward the workpiece, and a blade in said screw for engaging a screw in the workpiece, whereby turning of said screw effects turning of the workpiece screw.
