To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL WILLIAM Mc- CLAUGHRY, of Fox Lake, in the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Corner-Shield for Vagon- Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective device capable of attachment to any wagon-box and adapted to protect the faces and ends of the side-boards, so that they will not beinjured orbecome marred and to hold the end-boards of the box in place.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of one corner of a wagon-box, illustrating the application of the improved device to an end of a sideboard of the box and an end of an end-board. Fig. 2 is an inner face view of the device. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the device, and Fig. at is a horizontal section taken practically on the line 4 1 of Fig. 3.

A shield is adapted to be used at each end of each side-board of a wagon 'body or box. A represents the bottom of a wagon-box; B, one of the side-boards; O, the band-iron that is usually secured upon the upper edge of a side-board of a wagon-box D, an end-board,-

The shield is made of metal, either cast, forged, or otherwise shaped, and each shield is of box-like construction, comprising-an inner side 10, an outer side 11, a top 12, and a rear end 14, the space between the sides being such that the shield may snugly fit to the side faces of the side-board of the wagon-box, so that when the shield is placed in position upon the sideboard the lower edge of the inner face of the shield may rest upon the bed of the wagonbox; but, if desired, the outer side of the shield may be of greater height.

An extension 13 is provided in the top 12 at the inner or open edge of a shield when the band-iron O is employed in order that the end of the band-iron may be received neatly within the shield. The outer face or side 11 of the shield is provided with a reinforcement 15 at its outer lower corner, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and in positive lines in Fig. 3,

so that should a wheel of the vehicle engage with the shield it will not wear said shield to any appreciable or detrimental extent.

Parallel vertical flanges 17 are produced upon the inner side of the shield E, forming a space 18, adapted to receive the end of an each rib 19 being provided with a reduced section 19, extending below the lower edge of the shield,and preferably the reduced section 19 of the rib is threaded at its lower end to receive a nut20, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

lVhen a shield isin position upon a sideboard of a wagon-box, the lower end of the rib 19 will bear upon the bed of the wagonbody; but the reduced section 19 of the rib is carried through the bed of the wagon-body, so that when the nut 20 is screwed thereon to an engagement with the under side of the wagon-bed, the attachment thus provided will eifectually prevent the shield from leaving the side-board should the fastening devices passed through the apertures 16 become loosened or injured.

The locking-bar 21, usually passed longitudinally at the outer face of an end-board, is introduced at its ends into openings 21 made in the shields. The openings 21 in each shield are in transverse alinement, and the opening 21 in the outer face of a shield has its wall threaded, and in order to protect the shields from injury when tension is brought to bear on the locking-rods 21 the outer face of the shield around the outer opening il is reinforced, as shown at 22 in the drawings.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A corner-shield for wagon-boxes, consisting of an inner and an outer plate, a top connecting-section for the two plates and an outer end connecting-section for said plates, the space between the side plates beingadapted to receive an end of aside-board ofa wagonboX, the inner plate of said shield being provided with vertical flanges adapted to receive between them an end of an end-board of a Wagon-box, the inner face of the inner plate being likewise provided with a rib extending to the lower edge of the side plate and provided With a reduced section extending below the edge of the said inner side plate, and

upon the outer face of its outer plate, for the 20 purpose described.
