Description

(No Model.)
J. M. GOPPERNOLL 8a J. W. BRAND'OW.
ENDGATE. Patented Apr. 28, 1885.
fM r Br v i A T/VESSES UNITED Srarns PATENT Unmet,
JAMES M. OOPPERNOLL AND JOHN W. BRANDOW, J ORDANVTLLE,
NEW YORK.
[END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,748, dated April 28, 1885.
Application filed March 5, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES M. COPPER- NOLL and JOHN W. BRANDow, citizens of the United States, residing at J ordanville, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in End-Gates, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an endgate support, and is also designed to serve as a means for securing the side rails of a wagon to the bottom thereof; and it has for its object to.
provide a combined device of the character mentioned, which shall be simple in its con struction, strong, and durable, one that may be readily and easily applied to wagon or sleigh bodies in common use, and to provide a device which shall be cheap to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide the side rails of a wagon with brackets adapted to receive arms extending downwardly from supplemental side strips, which supplemental side strips are also provided with guide cleats or wings to form a support for a supplemental end-gate when necessary.
With the above and other ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of one of the side-boards of a wagon, showing my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of my improvement, and Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the guide bracket for receiving the arm of one of the sides.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents one of the sideboards of a wagon, upon the inner side of which, adjacent to the rear end thereof, is secured a plate, B, having formed integral therewith outwardly-extending wings or flanges O, which are arranged a-sufflcient distance apart to receive the end of the end gate or board. The said plate is secured to the side-board by means of bolts a, which pass through holes or openings formed in the plate B between the wings or flanges C.
D represents a supplemental side strip, which is provided on its inner side with a plate, E, having outwardly-extending wings or flanges F of the same construction as those described.
The lower plate, B, is provided with an outwardly-extending extension, G, which projects over the upper edge of the side rail, and a recess, [2, is formed in the lower edge of the plate E and supplemental side strip, D, to receive the same. i
G represents an arm, which is secured to the outer side ofstrip, and its lower end is adapted to engage a bracket, 0, secured to the sideboard, as shown.
At the lower end of the plate B is formed integral therewith a downwardlyextending rod, (1, which is threaded at its lower end. The said rod d is adapted to pass through a hole or opening in the side rail of the bottom of the wagon or sleigh body, and to be held in place by a nut, 6. By this arrangement the side-board at the rear end of the wagon is held firmly and securely in place. The said plates B andEare provided with integral flanges E, which bear against the inner sides of the wagon at their rear ends and serve to brace and strengthen the same.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with'the side-board of a wagon and the supplemental sidestrip, of the plates B and E, each having outwardly extending wings, and a flange, E, the plate B having an integral rod threaded at its lower end and an outwardly-bent extension, G, on the lower plate to fit a recess in the lower end of plate E, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES M OOPPERNOLL. JOHN W. BBANDOYV.
