The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1,is a perspective view of a jar or can opener constructed in accordance with this invention, the lever bemg in engagement with the lugs or flanges of the screw-cap. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the position of the lever being reversed. Fig. 3'is a detail perspective view of the screwcap. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of one of the lugs or flanges.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. 1 designates a screw-cap engaging a jar 2 in the usual manner and provided at opposite sides of its upper face with vertical lugs or flanges 3, arranged parallel with each other and provided attheir ends with curved notches 4., adapted to be engaged by a lever 5,whereby the cap is unscrewed from the jar. Each lug or flange is preferably constructed of a single piece of sheetmetal doubled to provide a thickened flange or lug and having the ends bent at a right angle to form attachmentflanges 5, which form an elliptical base, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings; but the form of the attachmentflanges, Which are soldered or otherwise secured to the cap, may be changed, as will be readily understood.

The recesses or notches 4 have rounded edges, and the edges of the lever fit the same,

and the said lever is provided near one end with an opening 6 to receive one of the lugs,and it has an offset or bend 7 near its other end for engaging one side of the other lug, the offset or bend being provided for arranging the adjacent end of the lever approximately diametrically opposite the other end of the same and to permit both ends of the lever to be opposite the center of the cap. The lever is enlarged adjacent to the opening 6, and its ends are also slightly enlarged and provided with openings. The engagement of the lever with the lugs or flanges of the screw-cap enables the latter to be readily removed and re placed. In unscrewing the cap the lever is arranged as shown in Fig. l of the accom panying drawings, and when it is desired to screw the cap on the jar the leveris reversed and arranged in the position shown in Fig. 2. The opening is adapted to be engagedwith either of the lugs or flanges, so that the lever can be quickly applied to the cap.

The invention has the following advantages: The device for removing screw-caps from jars, cans, and other receptacles is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction. It possesses strength and durability, and it may be quickly engaged with a screw-cap. The lever is also adapted to be readily reversed to arrange it for screwing a cap on or off a receptacle.

Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

What is claimed is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a screw-cap provided with lugs or flanges, located at diametrically opposite points of a reversible lever provided near one end with an opening to receive and interlock with one of the lugs or flanges, and having a bend or offset near its other end for interlocking with the other lug or flange and for arranging the adjacent end of the lever substantially diametrically opposite the other end, substantially as and for the purpose described.
